Zmanda With Internet-Based Windows Backup Solutions Storing Files on S3

And also improves MySQL backup and recovery.

Zmanda, in open source backup and recovery software, announced two major additions to the company’s rapidly expanding suite of open source backup and recovery solutions. The first new solution is Zmanda Internet Backup (ZIB), an Internet-based backup solution for Windows environments that stores its backup files on Amazon’s popular Simple Storage Service (S3). The second new product is Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) 3.0 for MySQL on Windows. The ZRM 3.0 Windows solution is the next generation upgrade of Zmanda’s MySQL database protection solution.

ZIB
is the IT industry’s first Windows backup and recovery solution that backs up a Windows Server and live applications such as Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange Server to Amazon’s highly dependable, scalable and affordable online storage service. ZIB is a cost-effective and easy-to-use data protection solution for small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs) who need backup and disaster recovery for their Windows Server and applications.

According to an August 8, 2008 IDC Link report, “Zmanda Enterprise Open Source Backup and Amazon S3 — Disrupting a $3B Storage Software Market?” Zmanda is “the only enterprise level backup application to support integration with Amazon Web Services for backup to the Amazon S3 storage. Businesses can use the Zmanda backup software — to backup, archive, and recover their valuable data easily and securely, anytime, via the Internet. This affords businesses without a disaster recovery location a solution where they can leverage the Amazon S3 infrastructure for backup and disaster recovery.”

ZRM 3.0 customers will be able to run Zmanda Recovery Manager in pure Windows environments to perform hot backup of live MySQL databases leveraging Window’s Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot technology as well as 1-click database restore using ZRM’s built-in point-in-time recovery capability.

Zmanda Recovery Manager is open source, enterprise-class backup and recovery software designed to help MySQL database administrators (DBAs) prevent serious damage caused by data loss in the event of human error and system or database failure. ZRM is designed specifically for MySQL databases and includes unique, enterprise-grade features such as MySQL storage engine and snapshot intelligence, replication support, and integration of backup operations with MySQL binary logs. ZRM comes with the Zmanda Management Console — a powerful Web-based graphical user interface that lets DBAs control backup and recovery across all MySQL servers from any browser enabled device.

Together, these additions to Zmanda’s product portfolio significantly improve the company’s ability to provide SMBs with simple and cost-effective backup and recovery solutions for Windows environments. Both products enhance Zmanda’s application-level backup and recovery capabilities, dramatically decreasing recovery time for popular applications such as Exchange and MySQL. Further, Zmanda’s customers can now take advantage of cloud storage, allowing them to backup, archive and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the Internet.

Zmanda’s mission is to ensure that customers can always recover their data while making the backup process simple, secure and cost-effective,” said Chander Kant, founder and CEO, Zmanda. “These new products take us a step further in delivering on this mission by supporting more operating systems, backing up more applications, and leveraging the benefits of new technologies such as cloud computing for our customers.”
