Open-E Enhanced its Unified File and Block Solution

With automatic failover for HA clusters, WORM support for digital archiving, and NDMP for universal backup

Open-E, Inc., a provider of unified file and block management software solutions, has introduced major enhancements to the Open-E Data Storage Server (DSS). The new enhancements — automatic failover for high-availability clusters; WORM (Write Once Read Many) support for digital archiving; and NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) support for universal backup — provide better data security, increased fault tolerance, and improved availability of all data, ultimately delivering better overall performance and value.

"The rapid growth of data proliferation requires enterprises to find high performance yet cost-effective storage management solutions," said Stuart Fisher, director of business development, AIC. "Open-E continues to exceed customer demands by delivering unified NAS/SAN solutions that set new standards of price and performance for flexible network storage systems."

Open-E DSS Delivers Superior Performance and Functionality to Enterprises
The Open-E DSS provides superior performance, reliability, and scalability delivered at a fraction of the cost of alternative offerings. Enhanced features include:

  • Automatic failover enables the Open-E DSS server to automatically switch over from a primary storage server to a secondary device in the event the primary server fails – or to simplify scheduled maintenance. Such functionality is ideal for high-availability environments such as financial institutions.
  • The WORM feature allows data to be permanently written to disk and available for reading only, thus preventing accidental modification or erasure of data. This feature improves performance in environments (such as educational institutions and government agencies) where documents are required to be retained for long periods.
  • Support for NDMP allows Open-E DSS to control backup and recovery data streams between a primary storage data server and a secondary one in heterogeneous network environments. Open-E’s implementation of NDMP is supported by Symantec Netbackup, EMC Legato Networker, CA Brightstor, and others. NDMP enables organizations to seamlessly integrate new backup applications with existing ones.

"Our next-generation Open-E DSS product offering continues our commitment to create a scalable, unified storage management solution that gives customers flexibility, enterprise-class performance and functionality at SMB prices," said Krzysztof Franek, CEO, Open-E.

About Open-E Data Storage Server (DSS)
Open-E Data Storage Server (DSS) provides a fast, reliable, and scalable storage operating system (OS) for block and file storage management. Open-E DSS offers enterprise functionality, enhanced manageability, superior reliability and increased productivity for applications ranging from file sharing, storage consolidation, backup and recovery, virtualization and disaster recovery.

Open-E DSS is built on the company’s industry recognized NAS/SAN software technology which is noted for its performance, superior security, robust operation and easy-to-use management advantages. With Open-E DSS, users can cost-effectively and quickly add storage to an existing network, consolidate storage and backups for multiple servers, centralize storage management with optimal performance and data protection, and improve data availability and efficiency. Additionally, Open-E DSS is a full, independent OS and does not require the installation of Linux, Windows or any other OS and can be up and running in minutes.

The solution supports a wide variety of hardware RAID platforms from the industry’s leading names, as well as multiple types of connectivity. The versatility of the Open-E DSS also allows users to combine NAS systems with iSCSI SAN systems, and provides built-in virus protection, while enabling the connection of multiple Network Interface Controllers, including Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel and InfiniBand.
