Ocarina Out of Stealth Mode
With a new online solution storing up to 10 times more data than current storage from any vendor, according the start-up
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on April 8, 2008 at 3:40 pmOcarina Networks announced the availability
of its industry-first online storage optimization solution, helping customers
store up to 10 times more data on their current storage from any storage vendor.
As
the volume of information created and shared over the Internet, including email
attachments, office and media files continues to grow at a massive rate, the
requirements for the modern Internet data center have dramatically evolved.
Now more than ever, organizations need solutions that cost-effectively increase
the capacity of their existing storage solutions, while decreasing related
operational expenses.
"The explosion of digital content is forcing organizations
to find ways to optimize primary disk capacity," said Heidi Biggar, an analyst
with Enterprise Strategy Group. "Products such as Ocarina’s storage optimization
technology, which compresses and de-duplicates data at the information level,
are taking center stage because of the immediate cost-savings they can enable.
In today’s world, tools like these aren’t just ‘nice-to-haves,’ they are becoming
‘must haves.’"
Introducing Ocarina
Led by a team of proven enterprise software executives
and backed by leading investors Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Highland
Capital Partners, Ocarina has developed an innovative, highly intelligent system
that optimizes the storage of online data.
Ocarina’s patented appliance uses
a three-step file-aware optimization process – Extract, Correlate and Optimize
(ECO) – to reduce the size of already compressed files and deliver unmatched
capacity improvements in storage systems in Internet data centers. Unlike other
solutions aimed at reducing storage data footprints such as dedupe and generic
compression, Ocarina uniquely has the ability to optimize large, media rich
files.
Photoways Group, the European leader of online photographic services
which operates under Photoways and PhotoBox brands, gets 1.5 million photos
uploaded per day. "Containing storage cap-ex and op-ex has a big impact on
our P&L. The first time I heard about Ocarina, it sounded simply too good to
be true," said Graham Hobson, CTO of Photoways Group. "Based on our initial
testing we are confident that the Ocarina solution will allow us to defer a
significant portion of our storage purchases this year, resulting in a drastic
reduction on capital spending as well as operational expenses. Bottom line,
we believe that Ocarina will pay for itself within six months of installation,
save us millions of Euros over the next few years, and change the way we buy
storage and the overall economics of our business in the future."
Additionally,
Ocarina is one of the first solutions to reduce the environmental impact of
online data storage. Its benefits include reduced cooling, rack space and energy
costs. And because there is no need to replace existing storage resources,
it is a far more cost-effective way to go green.
"The accelerating growth of
user generated content, graphics intensive applications, and increased compliance
requirements, is straining storage infrastructures worldwide," said Murli Thirumale,
CEO of Ocarina Networks. "Ocarina can provide immediate benefit to organizations
that are struggling to contain rising storage acquisition costs as well as
operational expenses such as power, cooling and data center space. Ultimately,
we help customers achieve the holy grail of increased data capacity with little
or no new investments in additional storage infrastructure."
Solution Overview and Availability
Available immediately, the Ocarina solution
includes:
- Ocarina Optimizer: A hardware appliance that reads files, optimizes
them, and writes them back to storage. - Ocarina Reader: A software solution
that in real-time expands optimized files created by the Optimizer.
