Magnum Semiconductor Chooses Intellistore, Quatrio and Diligent De-Dup
Reducing the time it takes to do a full backup by almost 80%

Diligent Technologies Corporation, a leading provider of
enterprise-class de-duplication and data protection solutions, and
Quatrio, the industry leader in high performance information systems,
today announced that Magnum Semiconductor has installed Quatrio’s PIVOT
300 backup-to-disk solution equipped with ProtecTIER, Diligent’s
industry leading inline de-duplication solution. Magnum, a leading
provider of chips, software, and platforms for consumer entertainment
systems, is the first mutual customer that has resulted from the newly
formed Diligent/Quatrio partnership.
As a rapidly growing company, Magnum had outgrown its tape-based backup
solution. With most of the files created by designers doing simulation
and verification, the company had nearly 5 million different files per
terabyte of storage. Magnum turned to Intellistore, one of the
company’s preferred technology solutions providers, to provide a
solution that would address its current backup needs of 20 TB per week
and have the ability to scale in order to handle Magnum’s expected
annual growth rate of 50 percent. Intellistore assembled and installed
a Virtual Tape Library (VTL)/de-duplication appliance featuring its
Quatrio PIVOT 300 server and storage offering and Diligent’s ProtecTIER
Enterprise solution, powered by HyperFactor, the industry leading
inline de-duplication technology. The appliance was deployed as the
storage backend for Symantec’s NetBackup 6.5 Enterprise to protect
Magnum’s heterogeneous data environment.
“Conducting a full backup with our previous solution took a great deal
of time. It wasn’t practical anymore,” said John Wunder, director of
IT, Magnum Semiconductor. “Since we installed the Quatrio/Diligent VTL
appliance, we have reduced the time it takes to do a full backup by
almost 80 percent. Individual client backup jobs now write to
dedicated virtual tape drives rather than queue up for limited physical
tape drives. In a word, backups at Magnum have become uneventful.”
After evaluating the cost to implement a new tape-based solution to
keep up with its growing data storage requirements, Magnum
Semiconductor estimates that it saved almost $300K by choosing the
Quatrio/Diligent solution. In addition, the amount of space, power and
cooling needed was far less.
As a software data de-duplication solution, Diligent’s ProtecTIER
offered the flexibility Quatrio required to seamlessly integrate into
its PIVOT family of data protection appliances. Quatrio’s PIVOT 300
model best matched the requirements of Magnum’s environment. Key
features of the PIVOT 300 include a RAID capacity of 2TB to 12 TB with
average throughput of 1 TB/hour, enabling reliable data protection,
quick deployment, and simple administration to meet the most aggressive
backup windows. The PIVOT 300 appliance has a 48x smaller footprint on
average and reduces energy consumption and lowers total cost of
ownership.
“We looked at a number of de-duplication vendors and their offerings,
including hardware and software, and we determined that Diligent has
the best, most scalable and cost-effective architecture to implement
and was the only true enterprise player in the space. It’s a very
elegant solution,” said David Chin, VP of Business Development of
Quatrio. “In addition, many VTL solutions are oriented toward SAN
environments and it is no secret that many businesses use a mixture of
NAS boxes from an assortment of vendors. The Diligent solution is
proven to work beautifully with NAS or SAN, or a combination of both.
It’s suitable for all of our customers, from the enterprise down to the
midrange.”
The Quatrio PIVOT family of data protection appliances appears to
existing back up infrastructure as industry standard tape devices and
media. It utilizes the highest quality, fully redundant components
that can be replaced without interruption to service. Data can be
replicated from PIVOT to PIVOT over long distances, without the need
for expensive bandwidth. PIVOT is a reliable, virtual technology that
reduces costs by reducing the need for human intervention.
“This is another indication of ProtecTIER’s flexibility in terms of
choices of underlying hardware; as well as its applicability for
midrange and high-end enterprise environments. End-users benefit from
the most scalable, inline de-duplication product on the market,” said
Doron Kempel, Chairman and CEO of Diligent Technologies. “We’re excited
about our reseller agreement with Quatrio and we’re pleased to be
meeting the backup needs of an emerging company like Magnum
Semiconductor.”
Diligent and Quatrio have entered into a global reseller agreement
allowing Quatrio PIVOT products, branded by Intellistore, to be
integrated with ProtecTIER. Intellistore will also resell the
ProtecTIER suite of solutions independent of Quatrio products.
