Compellent Gets Novell Certification

For SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and NetWare 6.5 OS

Compellent Technologies, Inc. announced at the
Novell BrainShare event that its storage area network (SAN) has been
certified with both Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and NetWare
6.5 operating systems, helping make it seamless for Novell
administrators to leverage the Compellent SAN to lower storage costs and
energy consumption. The Novell Yes Certified designation applies to both
Fibre Channel and iSCSI server connections to the Compellent SAN.

As sustainability initiatives become a growing trend, many storage
administrators are looking for greener data center solutions, but not at
the sacrifice of performance, administration time or higher cost. When
paired with Novell technology, Compellent’s
advanced storage virtualization, automated tiered storage and thin
provisioning can help administrators see significant savings on
hardware, energy expenses and CO2 emissions.

The Hesperia Unified School District, with 22,000 students in San
Bernadino County, Calif., recently consolidated its data storage and
Novell NetWare and GroupWise environment on the Compellent SAN. Hesperia
IT administrators soon realized significant performance, cost and green
benefits.

With the combined benefits of Compellent and
Novell we expect to eliminate 40 servers, all internal server disks, and
10 air conditioning units while implementing a true disaster recovery
solution
," said James Lincoln, assistant director of information
technology at Hesperia Unified School District. “That’s
good for the environment and our bottom line. We’re
now able to focus IT resources on enriching our students’
learning experiences.

Energy conservation in the data center has become increasingly critical.
Some analysts estimate nearly half of all data centers will not have
sufficient power and cooling capacities in 2008.

A majority of the energy in the data center
is wasted–estimates approach as much as 80 percent
,”
said Larry Aszmann, chief technology officer and co-founder, Compellent. “Reducing
disk drive requirements though the combination of storage
virtualization, automated tiered storage and thin provisioning can not
only help reduce the data center footprint, but also unlock the
potential cost savings of the new data center.
