History 2005: Hitachi GST Sued GS MagicStor
For infringement of several patents
By Jean Jacques Maleval | July 16, 2024 at 2:00 pmHDD giants continue to harass the small fries: This time, its Hitachi GST that has sued GS MagicStor, based in China, along with its parent company GS Magic and Riospring, which operates as its U.S. R&D center, for infringement of several patents.
HGST seeks monetary damages and a permanent injunction vs. the start-ups for importing the offending HDDs in USA.
In the past few months, Seagate and WD have both sued Cornice, another start-up in one-inch HDDs, for similar reasons.
Why is HGST singling out the Chinese firm and none other? Why for that matter, are Seagate and WD only taking on Cornice. Why are Fujitsu, Maxtor, Samsung or Toshiba, among others, doing nothing? It all seems like a crap shoot…
