History 2003: Digital Video Recorders Will Reach $24.7 Million Homes in 2007 in USA

The Yankee Group forecasts.

The penetration of digital video recorder (DVR) technology has picked up pace during 2003, but remains sluggish compared to most entertainment products.

DVRs will be in 3.2 million homes by the end of 2003, up 40% from 1.8 million homes at the end of 2002.

This Yankee Group forecast measures the installed base of homes with DVRs in USA. It includes standalone DVRs, DVRs integrated into cable set-top boxes, CE devices, and direct broadcast satellite (DBS) receivers. It does not include network DVR (nDVR) services cable operators are testing or DVR functions performed on the PC using Microsoft Media Center XP, Showshifter or other PC-based digital video recording applications.

The Yankee Group forecasts DVRs will reach 24.7 million homes by the end of 2007. It anticipates cable’s share of the market will grow more rapidly than previously expected, largely at the expense of the DBS DVR base.

Third-generation gaming consoles with integrated DVRs (such as the Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 2) will achieve rapid penetration from 2006 to 2007, driving the electronics manufacturers’ share of the DVR base.
