History 2002: Adic in Tape Virtualization
Following acquisition of VStor
By Jean Jacques Maleval | June 20, 2023 at 2:01 pmTape automation company ADIC has acquired the assets and hired the engineering team of VStor, a start-up in San Mateo, CA, which developed VIArk software to emulate tape on disk cache within a SAN, a type of product already found at IBM, StorageTek, NearTek and Grau.
These should not be confused with D2D backup systems, such as those offered by NetApp, Quantum, Alacritus Software, Avamar Technologies or Conduant, which simply replace tape with disk.
ADIC will acknowledge acquisition expenses of $1.5 million for the transaction.
V-Stor was founded in 2000 as a spin-off from Sutmyn Storage (whose Web site has disappeared?!). Its president was Flavio Santoni, a board member at Sutmyn, where he served as VP and COO. He is currently VP WW sales and marketing of LSI Logic Storage Systems.
This acquisition is further proof of ADIC’s commitment to software, after the company’s April release of StorNEXT Management Suite to manage disks and tapes on a single HSM-based platform.
