Keeping data protected and you in control: HPE and Commvault

Working together, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Development LP and Commvault Systems, Inc. can enhance your data security, simplifying backup and recovery – and putting you in control. Here’s how.

We all know that data is the lifeblood of any business, yet many organizations like yours continue to struggle with protecting data. Data can create business value, but with that comes significant liability. In fact, even as we speak, your organization is gathering data from multiple sources faster than ever before. Keeping pace with this unprecedented data growth poses a huge challenge. But perhaps the bigger challenge lies in securing the data so that it can be effectively utilized – without fear of unauthorized access or data loss

Ransomware and other threats on rise
Ransomware is a growing security problem and one of the biggest forms of cybercrime that organizations are facing. Every day, news feeds feature stories of criminals who brazenly announce they’re holding business-critical data hostage until a ransom is paid. And there’s no guarantee of getting that data restored, even if you pay the ransom.

Managed by well-funded criminal organizations with squads of full-time developers, ransomware has become a lucrative business.

With new strains of ransomware and other malware threats on the rise and data continuing to grow from edge to the cloud, your enterprise and customer data are more at risk than ever. In this fast-morphing environment, you must act quickly to protect business-critical data.

HPE+Commvault=Simplified backup and recovery
Over the years, one of our trusted partners to help customers in their data protection journey has been Commvault. We’ve teamed up with to offer capabilities by integrating Commvault software features directly with our primary and secondary storage platforms. The integration of Commvault solutions with HPE Storage systems like HPE Alletra, Primera, Nimble Storage, SimpliVity and Apollo Servers – coupled with HPE data protection platforms StoreOnce and StoreEver Tape – providing an availability solution for your enterprise. With this collaboration, you utilize industry recovery capabilities to minimize both devastating data loss and costly downtime.

Focusing on how HPE and Commvault enhance your data security
Commvault’s integration with HPE StoreOnce Catalyst in 2017 was the result of a joint engineering effort between the 2 companies. Integration of StoreOnce systems and Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery software through StoreOnce Catalyst allows Commvault to manage the full lifecycle of data management operations for StoreOnce systems. Seamless integration between StoreOnce systems using Catalyst Copy meets evolving backup, recovery, and compliance challenges, while tightening resource requirements and responding to the ever-expanding data growth that our customers are facing. The solution from Commvault and HPE includes support for low bandwidth mode (source-side) de-dupe that reduces redundant data, minimizes automated movement of data to lower cost storage as data ages based on user-defined policies, and includes support for synthetic, full backups using Catalyst Clone. With this integration, users can move backup data natively, reliably, and cost-effectively to the public, private, or hybrid cloud. This capability is delivered by HPE Cloud Bank Storage, resulting in long-term retention and reliable disaster recovery that is simple and efficient with up to 20x lower cloud storage.

The integration has now been further enhanced by Commvault’s support for immutable backups with StoreOnce Catalyst.

Configurable backup data immutability
Commvault has been working to integrate with StoreOnce Catalyst to provide configurable data immutability since the release of StoreOnce OS 4.3.2. How does this work?

  1. Security is enhanced, dictating what retention can be set in Commvault. If you set the maximum data immutability, then all policies that are using the store can have retention up the configured date.
  2. Once set, the data cannot be deleted on the storage until the retention date is met.
  3. Once enabled, the retention period cannot be reduced.
  4. Future backup jobs can be configured with lower retention date

How does this help?
Immutable backups keep backed-up data out of reach, effectively erecting a wall against ransomware attacks. Commvault Compliance lock and WORM storage controls keep retention locked in and apply object lock controls on cloud, and on StoreOnce Systems. StoreOnce Catalyst ensure that you can configure backup data immutability backups so that they that can’t be encrypted, modified, or deleted during the configured retention period. These solutions completely isolate data wherever it lives to prevent it from being tampered with, intentionally or unintentionally. Secure by design, backup copies are encrypted and inaccessible to ransomware and malware threats making sure that backups are not compromised.

Commvault media agents also integrate with StoreEver Tape to offer an air-gapped backup solution. Storing offline and offsite copies of data on tape, which has no connectivity to public networks helps ensure that ransomware cannot compromise your backup copies. The low cost StoreEver Tape combined with Commvault provides contingency against both the risk of cybercrime and disruptions caused by natural disasters and human errors.

Get back in control
When you are in control of your business data, you are no longer vulnerable to hackers’ demands. As the threat landscape continues to evolve, more and more enterprises will need to modernize their data protection edge to cloud to keep their data secure from any cyberattacks.

The 2 partnerst puts you in control and can improve efficiencies, too, by reducing cost, risk, and complexity in backup environments. Protecting your data at the edge, on-premises, and in the cloud will set you up to deliver on future SLAs, enabling you to meet demanding SLAs – both RPOs and RTOs – and keep your business moving ahead.

Moving forward, together
I’m excited about the coming months and the enhancements that are in store with our ongoing partnership with Commvault. We continue to innovate and raise the standards of data protection higher. We believe in the technology we have built over the years and our joint approach in delivering solutions with the common goal of enabling you to protect your data, on premises or in the cloud.

Stay tuned for more updates on our journey to protect your data and applications.
