This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on May 16, 2022 at 2:02 pmAt the Innovative Data Infrastructure Forum, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. announced the upgraded features of the OceanStor Pacific distributed storage, including the DR solution of multiple active data centers and converged storage solution for data lakehouses.
The OceanStor Pacific series meets the needs of new applications like HPDA, big data, and mass data backup and archiving.
Hugo Doucet giving keynote speech
At the forum, Hugo Doucet, executive account representative, said: “In the yottabyte era, cutting-edge technologies such as HPC, big data analytics, and AI are the main reasons why we have so many new applications and service flows today. We can use the word ‘hybrid’ to describe their typical characteristics, for example, hybrid performance model, hybrid multi-protocol access mode, and hybrid analysis based on historical and streaming data. The nature of Hybrid ‘X’ comes from the uncertainty of new workloads. To embrace new workloads with ease, we need to use certain solutions to cope with the uncertainty of service flows. The key to this lies in storage system innovation.“
The OceanStor Pacific series adopts SmartBalance, a balanced system design, to improve the efficiency for hybrid workloads. Converged indexing for unstructured data means that one copy of data is shared over multiple protocols with zero data copying, truly achieving native seamless multi-protocol interworking. In addition, with the data flow adaptive to large and small I/Os, the OceanStor Pacific delivers up to 160GB/s bandwidth, 6.4 million IO/s, and 640,000 OPs, improving the data processing efficiency of hybrid workloads.
The OceanStor Pacific houses 120 disks per 5U chassis. Such a density design combines with the 22+2 high-ratio erasure coding (EC) algorithm to deliver a 20% higher disk density per unit space than similar products and a 14.5% higher storage space utilization rate. This, in turn, increases the ROI of mass data storage.
Thanks to the DR solution of multiple active data centers, the OceanStor Pacific enables users to build a maximum of 12 data centers that simultaneously provide online data services. The overall storage space utilization rate remains at 61%, which is industry-leading, and even if one or two data centers fail, service continuity is maintained.
The OceanStor Pacific offers customers benefits in various new application scenarios. For example, in HPDA scenarios, it uses the SmartBalance system architecture and high-density design to handle hybrid workloads, making it a one-for-all storage system. In the performance genomic analysis field, it shortens human WGS data analysis from 24h to 7mn. In big data scenarios, it uses the decoupled storage-compute big data architecture and implements converged storage for data lakehouses to help customers make informed decisions in minutes. In mass data backup and archiving scenarios, it leverages its high-density design, metadata indexing in seconds, and the DR solution of multiple active data centers to help customers unlock the value of warm and cold data.
