History (1995): WD Selects 82,000 Square Foot Facility in Singapore Industrial Estate

For manufacturing HDDs

Western Digital (Irvine, CA) has selected a new 82,000 square foot facility in Singapore’s Industrial Estate to manufacture its latest high-performance drives.

The new facility, in close proximity to the company’s current Singapore operations, will feature 6,000 square-feet of cleanroom space and is expected to employ approximately 500 people in its first year of production.

In November 1994, WD created the High Performance Storage Group (Rochester, MN), which features 100 employees focused on high-end HDDs and is expected to produce its first units by July, 1996.

This article is an abstract of news published on the former paper version of Computer Data Storage Newsletter on issue 93, published on October 1995.

Note: Quantum closed this facility in 2002 after firing 2,500 employees and moving operations to Malaysia.
