History (1996): Thin-Film Disk Maker HMT Purchased Assets of Computer Memory Disk Corp.

By Jean Jacques Maleval | June 14, 2021 at 2:31 pmThin-film disk manufacturer HMT Technology (Fremont, CA) has completed its purchase of certain assets of Computer Memory Disk Corp. or CMDC (Eugene, OR) for approximately $5 million.
CMDC, a subsidiary of Furukawa Electric. manufactures aluminum substrates used in the production of thin-film disks for HDDs.
Last year, Conner Peripherals acquired for $31 million certain assets from Stormex, another Furukawa subsidiary and CMDC.
HMT plans to spend $40 million to increase CMDC’s aluminum substrate capacity and expand production to include nickel-plating and polishing.
