SDC 2020: Raidix Presents RAID Solutions With ERA Technology V3.1

Providing 10 million IO/s

Raidix Corporation has presented results of a testing and research work, aiming to break the barrier of 10 millions IO/s per RAID.

ERA architecture

Raidix Era Scheme

Report on the findings, that include some of the new features employed in company’s ERA technology, was introduced at SDC 2020, the conference for developers of storage solutions.

Results of the team work were delivered to the storage community by Sergey Platonov, chief strategist and ERA product owner, Raidix. Tests and tuning of the storage system were carried out earlier this year and preceded the ERA 3.1 release, though major part of the presented findings will be included into the next official release of ERA technology, scheduled for the end of 2020.

The issue, that lies behind the research, is known, yet rarely addressed: existing software solutions for NVMe devices restrain their performance potential. Storage subsystem, equipped with standard software, delivers only up to 50% speed out of maximum drives performance, though in theory these components are able to provide tens of millions of IO/s and tens of GB/s per single server.

The purpose of the study, which Platonov spoke about at the conference, was to break the threshold of ten millions IO/s and try to show the potential of the fastest drives at the market. The report examines the performance of standard storage devices and describes the steps that the company’s team followed in order to tune the test system and get the aimed result.

In the course of the research, the team saw necessity in developing a new software RAID, which later was transformed into the ERA technology and since that has been shared with the storage community for free (for limited number of drives). Evolution of ERA continues with plans to employ high-performance persistent memory in the future.
