Veritas Enterprise Data Services Platform Powered NetBackup 8.2 Software

To get simplycity: highly available apps, always protected and recoverable data, and insights that drive operational efficiency and regulatory compliance

Veritas Technologies LLC announced the Enterprise Data Services Platform, a unified set of technologies designed to abstract the complexity of enterprise IT.

Veritas Eds Platform Architecture

The platform, which is powered by the company’s NetBackup 8.2, allows customers to get what matters to them most, simply: highly available apps, always protected and recoverable data, and insights that drive operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Infrastructure complexity is damaging IT’s ability to meet the demands of today’s always-on enterprise,” said Greg Hughes, CEO, Veritas. “Our new Enterprise Data Services Platform, powered by NetBackup 8.2, allows enterprises to gain control of their data to help them manage its growth, reduce the impact of ransomware, and prove compliance for on-premises and cloud environments.

Starting with protection: Evolution of backup
While many enterprises believe most of their data should be backed up, the reality is different. According to the recent
Value of Data study (registration required) conducted by Vanson Bourne for the company, 52% of business data is ‘dark data’ and unmanaged by policy.

Why? Most often, it is because enterprises do not know what data exists in their organization or where it lives. NetBackup 8.2 helps enterprises address this by supporting more than 500 data sources and over 150 storage targets, including 60 cloud providers. It can be deployed in any form factor, making it at versatile and extensible approach to data management.

Telefónica is a long-time user of NetBackup. We use it to protect data across our business and to meet regulation compliance,” said Ajit Sharma, director, business optimisation IT, Telefónica UK. “We’re excited by how the new Veritas Enterprise Data Services Platform builds on the capabilities of NetBackup giving us the ability to standardize and simplify how we manage our data.

Layering on Availability: Automation, orchestration, and performance matter
The right technology for 24/7 business should provide complete infrastructure abstraction. It should support any OS, application, hypervisor, cloud and storage; provide automation and orchestration of data recovery and testing; and give businesses the ability to monitor applications for availability and performance. This is what the company’s InfoScale provides and why enterprises trust it.

What’s new in InfoScale?

  • Ability to cluster AWS Availability Zones for migrated, mission-critical applications

  • Support for Chef and Ansible platforms

  • IPv6 support

  • Solutions for Nutanix, Dell EMC ScaleIO, and NVM Express

  • Security enhancements

Generating Insights: Achieving regulatory readiness
The recent Value of Data study concluded that 83% of respondents felt data silos were negatively impacting their organization’s ability to prove regulatory compliance. To solve this problem, Veritas is introducing a new unified information intelligence tool – Information Studio – that provides clear visibility, targeted analysis, and informed action on data.

What’s new in Information Studio?

  • Connectors to 20+ cloud and on-premises data repositories including NetBackup

  • Visual rendering of metadata to identify what exists, where it exists, and who has access

  • Classification of data to identify personally identifiable information

  • Deletion to reclaim storage resources, lower costs, and reduce risks

Information Studio is the newest addition to the firm’ Insights portfolio, which also features acquired APTARE, the IT analytics solution for managing data for storage and backup systems for hybrid cloud environments.

Exponential data growth, prominent data threats like ransomware, and a highly volatile and ever-changing data regulatory environment are not new challenges for businesses to deal with, but complexity stymies IT’s ability to solve these challenges and better empower the business,” said Phil Goodwin, research director, IDC. “Abstracting this complexity, while improving application availability, is what IT organizations need and what Veritas is addressing.

Veritas Technologies claimed that the Veritas Solution Day event is the most important one in the history of the company.

We understand that this statement refers only to the current era of Veritas and completely forgot previous and notorious periods of Veritas Software (1992-1997 and then 1997-2005 with OpenVision Technologies and the arrival of NetBackup).

Nothing is currently possible at Veritas if you don't consider the period before the acquisition of Symantec. The security company finally froze Veritas product development.

How Veritas was not able to release an object storage product before 2017 and finally wait until September 2017 to announce a product. How Veritas, seen as the SDS leader, didn't lead the distributed file storage landscape as all pieces were available in house for many many years.

This Veritas Enterprise Data Services platform announcement confirms that a horizontal data management solution like an enterprise backup and recovery product is the must-have element in a comprehensive data driven business. The reason is obvious finally, such solution must support lots of various systems (different generation and models), OS, applications (different releases) and devices (most of the time heterogeneous) and deployment models (on-premises, cloud, SaaS, VM and containers) plus has all the history of data in secondary storage, ready to be mined. This is the beauty of NetBackup, probably the most deployed enterprise data backup product for more than two decades. So having such data collect/copy/protection/policy engine with the ability to harness its catalog is a real advantage serving here as a foundation what we can called as well the first pillar, Veritas names it Protection.

The second pillar is more classic with Availability represented by the InfoScale product line. InfoScale is the family with products such VxFS (Veritas File System), VxVM (Veritas Volume Manager) and VCS (Veritas Cluster Server) and also some options like DMP, FSS, available for multiple platforms.

For sure, having data protected is fundamental but applications need to have access data to support the business. In other words, No Data No Business but also No App No Business, both are critical, nothing new here. Protection is important but not enough, the reverse is true as well. Veritas understood that and Mark Leslie, founding chairman and former CEO, decided to add NetBackup to the portfolio in 1997 with the OpenVision Technologies acquisition.

The last pillar is about Insights covered by two products - one is new Information Studio and one is based on the recent acquisition of Aptare -. Having the visibility to data, its value, its attributes, its access pattern, its users, its compliance exposure are also key and represent the third dimension here.

This new Veritas strategic product message remembers what Veritas Software has promoted a long time ago with the Business Without Interruption tagline and later with Protect - Access - Manage, also Adaptive Software Architecture and the Utility Computing model that finally anticipated the cloud wave. Now the dimension of the knowledge of the data is added seriously in a comprehensive way.

Veritas is positioned with a rich product portfolio, we named this in the past Power of the portfolio with some strategy to Cross/Up-Sell products. Forced by the market pressure, new initiatives and new and established players, the company has to reinvent itself once again thanks to the richness of its portfolio. Veritas as an ISV is still the number #1 data management company in the world considering data protection, data availability and data insights approaches it offers.
