History (1988): First DATA-DAT Subsystem From TEAC

Teac (Japan) will release a large capacity storage subsystem, the RS-2, for ¥398,000 which uses digital audiotape, and a 3.5-inch micro FDD, the FD-235J that has on OEM price of ¥35,000.

The RS-2 can be used with MS-DOS of the NEC PC9800 series.

It can store up to 1,024MB of data on one cassette and uses a read-after-write four-head system to catch errors.

It measures 155x175x355mm and weighs 5.5kg.

The FDD uses a barium ferrite disk for a 4MB capacity.

With a height of 25.4mm and a weight of 380g, this unit has a data transfer rate of 1Mb/s and can be driven with a single power unit of DC5V.
