WW Market of Enterprise and External Disk Storage Systems From 2002 to 2018 – IDC

CAGR being 6.3% and 4.3% respectively

For global enterprise disk storage systems as well as external enterprise disk storage systems, the worldwide market was growing every year but in 2009, 2013, 2016 and 2017 (here only for external systems for these later two years), according to the figures from IDC Corp.

2018 was an excellent period with the two markets expanding 22% and 16% respectively pushed by AFA and hybrid configurations. CAGR from 2002 to 2018 are 6.3% and 4.3% respectively.

For disk systems, HP then HPE were the leaders all years from 2002, but in 2006 and 2007 surpassed by IBM, in 2011 by EMC in 2016, and by Dell in 2018 by adding acquired EMC. Sun disappears from the ranking in 2018 and NetApp appears from 2007 and Huawei from 2006, and Inspur in 2018.

In 2018, behind Dell EMC representing 20% of the total market, the followers were in order HPE (17%), NetApp (6%), IBM (4%), Hitachi (3%), Huawei (2%), Lenovo (2%) and newcomer Inspur with a very small percentage and referenced since 4Q18 only. Apart from these leaders, the other manufacturers not including got a huge 44% of the total.

For external disk systems, HP was number one in 2002 and 2003, EMC from 2004 to 2015, then Dell EMC until 2018.

Last year, the ranking was: 1/ Dell EMC (31%), 2/ NetApp (13%), 3/ HPE (10%), 4/ IBM (8%), 5/ Hitachi (7%), Huawei (2% with only 4Q18 sales), and all others (30%).
