PRELIMINARY CQ2 ’18 Results:
Shipments Rise to 94.3-96.3 Million on Seasonal Game Console Increases
Nearline Sales Remain Strong
• 3.5″ Desktop/CE HDDs: Total desktop/CE HDD shipments (including 3.5″ external HDDs) in the range of 29 million to 30 million held flat to falling slightly Q/Q.
• 2.5″ Mobile/CE HDDs: Seasonal acceleration in game console HDD shipments more than offset slightly lower shipments of mobile HDDs going to PCs and external HDDs, resulting in total 2.5″ mobile/CE shipments rising to around 46 million to just under 47 million units.
• 3.5″/2.5″ Enterprise HDDs: Hyperscale demand for nearline HDDs remained strong even as most tier 1 cloud companies transition from 10TB to 12TB. For the quarter, nearline shipments of 13.9 million to 14.0 million should slightly exceed last quarter’s unit shipments, while exabyte shipments should post another all-time record. Performance enterprise HDDs dipped modestly, falling around 5% Q/Q to a range of 5.4 million to 5.5 million units.
