IBM AIX Runs Virtualized on Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor

Including networking and storage

IBM AIX enabled for IBM Hyperconverged Systems powered by Nutanix

With recent enhancements, it is now possible to run AIX 7.2 TL 2 SP2, or later, on IBM Hyperconverged Systems powered by Nutanix IBM CS821 and IBM CS822 server nodes.

AIX can be ordered with CS821 or CS822 servers using the AIX monthly subscription model provided through IBM Passport Advantage (PA: D1S5GLL). For ease of deployment, AIX ‘cloud ready,’ raw disk images are available. These images can be used directly for VM deployments on CS series nodes.

AIX runs virtualized on the Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor, including storage and networking. Its VM lifecycle is managed with Prism. IBM Hyperconverged systems support is integrated into the same AIX 7.2 distribution that also runs on PowerVM platforms, and it is binary compatible with AIX running on PowerVM.

Additional details will be made available in the AIX publications or potentially an IBM developer Works article.

Key prerequisites

  • The initial AIX support will be with IBM POWER8 technology-based CS821 (8005-12N) and CS822 (8005-22N) nodes.
  • Acropolis OS (AOS) 5.2.1 and Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV) 20170331.74.
  • AIX 7.2 with the 7200-02 Technology Level with Service Pack 7200-02-02-1810 and APAR IJ05283, or later.

Planned availability date: May 11, 2018
