Peter Gruenberg, Nobel-winning scientist who advanced computer technology, dies at 78

Peter Gruenberg, a German scientist who won the Nobel Prize in physics for a discovery that made possible great advances in computer technology, by enabling the rapid reading of vast quantities of stored data, died last week. He was 78.
Dr. Gruenberg’s prize was for the discovery of the process known as giant magnetoresistance, which formed the basis for the fast, precise extraction of huge amounts of stored information through the harnessing of subtle electrical and magnetic effects.
