Start-Up SurCloud in On-Premise Cloud Storage Infrastructure

Operating SUSE OpenStack Cloud

Founded in 2010 by Alex Wang and based in Santa Clara, CA, SurCloud Corp. is still a confidential player in the private cloud storage infrastructure.

We don’t see a lot of employees on LinkedIn, and Crunchbase contains very limited and no financial information. Also the web site has an old look with only one long page.

The company develops All-in-One Appliance, a pre-installed and optimized hardware rack with pre-configured software. It runs SUSE OpenStack Cloud with two innovations from SurCloud TruPrivacy and SurFS.

TruPrivacy is a patented encryption technology which guaranteed zero data breach according to the company and tests.

SurFS is an open source distributed file storage designed for OpenStack and based on ZFS. The solution offer multiples interfaces like block and file sharing protocols such NFS and SMB. It uses a specific control and data plane approach.

All storage drives are dual ported providing a single point of failure whatever the nature of them: HDD, SSD or NVMe disk. Data are protected with an erasure-coding model with N+3 redundancy mechanism. Internally, the rack uses high bandwidth networking components such 40GbE, 48Gb/s SAS-3 and 128Gb/s PCIe.

The half rack can contain 880 CPU cores, 40TB of memory and 1.44PB of usable storage capacity.

In term of specifications, the firm indicates few numbers:

  • Maximum concurrent access: 3.5 million (equivalent to about 40 million users with online access at the same time.)
  • Maximum number of VMs: 25,000
  • Maximum number of VMs running concurrently: 9,000
  • IO/s: 1.43 million
  • Throughput: 8.9GB/s

The rack offers a comprehensive monitoring, management and operations console for a full control of the provided IT services.
