Two Australian Clinics Dodge, Lotus Dermatology and Coco Skin Laser Health Avoided Three Days of Business Disruption

With Datto backup appliance

Two Newcastle medical clinics avoided more than three days of business disruption when a Datto, Inc. backup appliance kept them running after the rare failure of their network server.

Lotus Dermatology and collocated business Coco Skin Laser Health are specialists in the field of dermatology and cosmetic medicine, sharing purpose-designed central city premises and employing more than 20 people to provide skin care services for customers from around the region.

Both of them use the latest technology both for their services and for day-to-day operations. Computer systems play an essential role in managing appointments and storing patient records to meet operational and regulatory requirements.

After a faulty motherboard shut down a one-year-old server, IT services firm Dynamic Business Technologies Pty Ltd put the two clinics back in business that same day by giving them access to their records with the Datto SIRIS backup appliance, which makes a near real-time backup of their data.

Marketing manager, Coco Skin Laser Health Joe Relic said Dynamic Business Technologies played an essential role in keeping the businesses online: “The importance of this partnership was demonstrated in early 2017 when Dynamic Business Technologies helped us overcome a server hardware failure that typically would have taken both businesses offline for days. When our server’s main board failed, business was put on hold until the backup system came online, which happened the same day. Dynamic Business Technologies not only kept us online and running via the Datto backup appliance, which they had recommended and supplied, but they also managed the entire warranty support process with Dell.

Both Lotus Dermatology and Coco Skin Laser Health worked locally off the Datto appliance for three days while Dell replaced the server motherboard and then migrated it back into production.

The estimated saved cost of downtime for both businesses during this period, including the number of employees, lost revenue, wages and overheads, was more than $354,000. Despite what could have been a substantial loss to both businesses, we didn’t miss a beat and no data was lost,” said Relic.

Dynamic and Datto also kept us running on another occasion when we discovered locked files on our server after a cryptovirus infected it. We phoned Dynamic who restored our files immediately. Without them, it would have taken a lot of time and effort to recover our files. By backing up so frequently, the Datto system equips a business to recover its files even if a problem occurs,” said Relic. “We trust Dynamic to keep our data secure at a time when IT systems are the heart of our business.

Dynamic Business Technologies is a Datto partner in Australia, awarded Datto’s Pioneer of the Year award at its DattoCon conference in the US in June. Datto – named by Gartner, Inc. as a Visionary for DR as a Service – handles more than one million backups a week at its nine data centres, storing data in the cloud for from one year to an indefinite period.

The Datto SIRIS total data protection platform creates and stores backup snapshots of a computer HDD or network as often as every five minutes. It defeats hardware failures and ransomware scams by providing instant access to the stored backup, enabling the customer to keep working with minimal disruption.
