Datto Launching Ransomware Protection to Proactively Respond to Malware Threat

Automatic ransomware detection and recovery for SMBs

Datto, Inc. announced enterprise ransomware protection for SMB, available from its MSP partners.

DATTO_RANSONWAREBuilt into firm’s suite of products, ransomware protection and recovery automatically detects and identifies attacks, notifying administrators to immediately rollback to healthy data. The solution shortens downtime, saves money and reduces the impact to businesses, giving companies an effective and reliable alternative to paying hackers’ ransoms.

The FBI predicts ransomware will be a $1 billion industry within the next year, and company’s State of Ransomware Report (registration required) revealed 91% of MSPs surveyed have seen clients victimized by ransomware. As malware advances in sophistication, the ability to rapidly identify an attack and quickly recover means a business is backup and running in minutes as opposed to days. The firm applied its customers’ successes in rolling data back to pre-malware snapshots and developed a new arsenal against malicious encryption, which is now incorporated into the company’s Backupify, firm’s NAS and Drive offerings, as well as ransomware detection within its SIRIS and ALTO appliances. Product enhancements support the firm’s commitment to ensure business data is secure and accessible, no matter where it lives.

Businesses are already grappling with ransomware fallout on a regular basis. However, they don’t yet see the extent to which their SaaS, file-sync-and-share and cloud services can expose them to even greater risk from these attacks,” said Joe Gleinser, president and founder, GCS Technologies, Inc.. “With the new ransomware detection and protection capabilities, Datto has amplified its backup expertise and given us the ability to rescue our customers from one of today’s biggest threats.

With company’s ransomware detection feature, available on SIRIS and ALTO devices, MSPs can identify a ransomware attack and roll systems back to a point in time before the attack hit. Ransomware, like most illicit software, leaves an identifiable footprint as it takes over a server, PC or laptop. Firm’s devices, which monitor backups, can detect a ransomware footprint and instantly notify admins that they have a ransomware attack on their hands. Recovery is then simply a matter of restoring from a previous backup.

Company’s survey found that a staggering 35% of partners encountered ransomware in the cloud, leaving cloud-based file-sync-and-share systems just as vulnerable as local systems.

Ransomware enhancements include:

  • NAS: Traditionally deployed as a cloud-protected NAS device, the device includes NAS Guard, which allows customers to protect the device and other network storage with full image rollbacks under one umbrella.

  • Backupify: Subscribers can roll files and data stored in software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications, such as Google Apps and Office 365, back to a known good state of health.

  • Drive: Building on the ransomware lessons learned from Backupify, Drive performs daily backups in the cloud and on customers’ local appliances, protecting both from ransomware.

“Our service providers often deal with multiple ransomware incidents per day, and many businesses are forced to pay expensive ransoms or close their doors forever after crippling attacks,” said Austin McChord, CEO and founder, Datto. “With the automatic ransomware detection and recovery throughout Datto’s products, we’re giving data control back to customers and empowering our partners to save the day – the way it should be.
