Symbolic IO Emerges From Stealth With Computational-Defined Storage Solution

Founded by former CTO of HP StorageWorks

Symbolic Io Corporation emerged from stealth mode with a suite of products destined to change the way industry defines storage and computing architecture, by bringing to market the first truly computational-defined storage solution.

The company’s product, named IRIS (Intensified RAM Intelligent Server), will be offered in three variations: IRIS Compute, IRIS Vault and IRIS Store.

The server solution introduces a new approach to storage and computing by rethinking how binary bits are processed and ultimately changing the way data is utilized.

Symbolic’s solutions ensure that enterprise storage and compute no longer rely on media or hardware, instead ‘materializing’ and ‘dematerializing’ data in real-time and providing greater flexibility, performance and security.

We have been testing IRIS in our organization and it’s completely changing the way we see storage and computing,” said Will Prince, VP operations, MetTel, a comprehensive voice, data, and cloud solutions provider. “Our prior system would take minutes to run advanced database queries, IRIS is completing the queries ins, in initial beta tests. The IRIS solution isn’t only the fastest product we’ve used, but it eliminates very real challenges for our organization, including data creep, duplication of data and it is creating one place for management workflow. It’s giving us computational power and speed in a very dense hardware footprint.”

How it Works
Symbolic IO’s proprietary OS, SymCE is dependent solely on the power of the processor, therefore, it is media agnostic, enhancing the underlying media’s density and performance, beyond anything previously conceived by traditional manufacturers. The proprietary technology is based on patented algorithms that work seamlessly with the current workflow and instruction sets, allowing for an easy implementation and zero downtime. In addition the solution is a secure offering, given the OS is a conversion engine converting any data into a new sub-state, rendering the information useless to anyone else other than the systems owner, given it’s not stored.

This industry hasn’t really innovated in more than 20 years, even the latest offerings based on flash have limitations that cannot be overcome. Our goal at Symbolic IO was to completely redefine and rethink the way computing architectures work. We’ve completely changed how binary is handled and reinvented the way it’s processed, which goes way beyond the industry’s current excitement for hyper-conversion,” said Brian Ignomirello, founder, chairman and CEO, Symbolic IO. “One of our early tests, allows us to run a full cable class content delivery network over 80+ nodes, while streaming 80+ full-featured movies simultaneously on one channel and requires less than 8% of the CPU capacity and we had plenty of headroom to run more. IRIS is 10,000 times faster than today’s flash.

Offerings:
IRIS Compute delivers the fastest, unparalleled processing performance, 10 times faster than 3D XPoint.

IRIS Vault delivers computationally secure, unrecognizable data, and crypto shred and lock out features. It offers physical security with Symbolic’s advanced ASIC and sensory technology, which features a secure shipment and other features.

IRIS Store offers the greatest density of any storage device, by consistently surpassing one petabyte in 2U.

IRIS, the company’s first product, has been beta tested and will be in early access production with customers, prior to a limited availability release in late 4Q16

The product will be based on a build cost structure with beginning units starting at approximately $80,000 and going up depending on features.

More on the start-up:

Symbolic IO Corp. was formerly known as Symbolic Technologies, Inc. and changed its name in June 2012.

It is based in Holmdel, NJ in the former Bell Laboratory facility.

The start-up raised $1.4 million in 2013 and $13.8 million on January 9, 2015, total amount now being $15.2 million.

According to The Wall Street Journal, "At the close of its series A funding round in January [2015], the company was valued at $130.35 million, he [Ignomirello] said".

Symbolic IO,IgnomirelloBrian Ignomirello, chairman and CEO, founded the company in 2012. He as CTO of Hewlett Packard's StorageWorks team from December 2007 to December 2011. He is also founder and chairman since 13 years of Storagenix, an organization that focuses on incubation and development with storage leaders around the world who design, prototype and develop hardware and software innovations. He was chief technologist at NetApp from 2003 to 2007, VP of engineering at GiantLoop Networks from 2000 to 2003 and L3 engineering at EMC from 1993 to 2000.

Some Patents assigned to Brian Ignomirello:

  • Bit Markers and Frequency Converters
Through the encoding of binary data, one may store the same information as contained in data that is not encoded, but do so within a smaller space. This encoding will permit economies to be realized because fewer storage areas within recording media will be used.
  • Method and apparatus for dense hyper IO digital retention
System and method to encode and decode raw data. The method to encode includes receiving a block of uncoded data, decomposing the block of uncoded data into a plurality of data vectors, mapping each of the plurality of data vectors to a bit marker; and storing the bit marker in a memory to produce an encoded representation of the uncoded data. Encoding may further include decomposing the block of uncoded data into default data and non-default data, and mapping only the non-default data. In some embodiments, bit markers may include a seed value and replication rule, or a fractalized pattern.
