Datrium Announcing DVX Insane Mode

Dynamic storage system acceleration delivers up to 2x more performance instantly.

Datrium, Inc. announced Insane Mode with its latest DVX system software release.

With this release, an operator can dynamically increase the number of storage operations possible for a virtualized host with the touch of a console button. Typical results often deliver up to a two-fold increase in virtual server application performance, translating to over 100,000 IO/s per host and three million IO/s per DVX system, without requiring a controller change of any kind.

Unlike arrays, where ‘QoS’ means guaranteeing a share of a limited CPU resource, DVX is designed around private cloud computing elasticity. It uses a small amount of compute from each virtualized server to power storage system performance, so the system gets faster with every server. With Insane Mode, reserved cores for storage IO on a server will grow on demand from 20% to 40%, often doubling storage performance while you watch. Test examples are highlighted in the company’s blog: Its Now OK to Go Insane. This mode takes maximum advantage of the DVX’s use of local host flash drives for read performance.

DatriumDVX_SCHEMEDVX operators can now boost storage performance dynamically for their VMs two ways, neither of which is possible with arrays. First, if a host lacks CPU or flash headroom for DVX storage processing, one can vMotion the workload to a server nearby with more resource capacity. Second, if a host has unused local CPU headroom, one can turn on Insane Mode and accelerate the workload in-place.

Storage arrays are the new mainframes,” said Brian Biles, CEO, Datrium. “Some are very sophisticated, but they ask you to ignore the commoditization of compute and flash, limiting performance and sacrificing simplicity. Datrium’s server-powered DVX, now with Insane Mode, offers on-demand storage performance unlike anything a conventional array could ever provide.

Datrium DVX has been a huge win for us, allowing us to consolidate 120 SQL databases while maintaining high and easily tuned performance,” said Brad Taylor, manager, technical operations, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. “The on-demand IO acceleration of Insane Mode is completely unprecedented-I’ve seen nothing else like it. It feels like the elasticity of cloud; with the flip of a switch I can get an instant performance boost.

Insane Mode is available and is bundled with DIESL Hyperdriver software version 1.0.6.1 at no additional charge.
