Available with the latest release of NetBackup Appliance 2.7.1, Copilot provides visibility into backup and recovery processes and is an extension to company’s enterprise product portfolio. This announcement continues to strengthen the company’s role with partners like Oracle.
New Way to Protect Oracle
With NetBackup Copilot for Oracle, Veritas is improving the backup and recovery of Oracle databases. For the first time, Oracle database administrators (DBAs) can maintain control over primary backup and recovery operations using native Oracle tools while secondary operations and policies are managed by NetBackup administrators. This allows Oracle DBAs to manage backup and recovery through tools like RMAN while NetBackup administrators oversee operations such as deduplication, replication and cataloging. In addition, the feature provides full visibility into and awareness of other administrator’s activities.
“As the size of databases continues to increase, IT organizations are challenged to keep up with the demands it places on staff, storage and network resources. NetBackup Copilot for Oracle offers a fresh, new approach to simplifying Oracle database backup and recovery,” said Scott Anderson, SVP, appliance solutions, Veritas. “Standardizing on NetBackup, a single, unified, data protection platform, helps ensure customers’ critical data is secure and always available.“

The Copilot capability combines NetBackup software and NetBackup Appliances to deliver breakthrough performance within a self-service operating model. NetBackup Copilot allows DBAs to independently manage backups on their own schedule, maintain visibility across all storage tiers, and recover from any available copy. Backup administrators can implement policies to manage the storage, retention and movement of database backup copies to disk, tape or cloud storage tiers. In addition, Copilot dramatically reduces backup times with NetBackup Accelerator for Oracle, and increases database backup performance.

Scalability
In addition to the Copilot feature, the NetBackup Appliance 2.7.1 software doubles the storage capacity of the NetBackup 5330 Appliance series. This appliance series will support an additional storage expansion shelf along with higher capacity disk drives to increase usable capacity and the deduplication pool size to 458TB. The expanded capacity will enable customers to reduce OpEx and CapEx.
By using these new features, companies can minimize cost and complexity of their data protection environment while improving the QoS by expanding into the cloud, embracing as-a-service modes of operation and having greater insight into their data protection operations.
“As many IT environments struggle to achieve better data protection, preservation, availability and storage management, Veritas is delivering on its vision of information availability and insights with exciting new features like NetBackup’s Copilot. It is exciting to watch Veritas build on its data protection and data management pedigree with new storage insights and intelligence that recognize the cooperative requirements of workload administrators (like Oracle DBAs and backup admins) by delivering solutions that align with tomorrow’s IT challenges,” said Jason Buffington, senior analyst, data protection, Enterprise Strategy Group.
NetBackup 7.7.1 is available and NetBackup Appliance 2.7.1 will be available for customers in December, 2015 through the company’s channel partners, as well as directly through the company.
