The company strengthens and refines here the platform’s core backup and recovery capabilities, enhances usability and makes it easier to perform legal holds on end-user data and migrate data quickly from one device to another.
“Our business is to ensure our customers’ endpoint data is protected and secure-so they can easily recover, search and analyze it,” said John Durant, SVP, product development, Code42. “In our 5.0 release we responded to customer requests for streamlined legal holds, faster data migrations and an elegant user interface-and we are excited to show them what we’ve done. We continue to invest in our powerful platform with a focus on how to help IT and other departments leverage the value of consistent and reliable endpoint archives.“
In response to customer demand, 5.0 features include: a app to simplify the legal hold process; faster data migrations across platforms; a redesigned user interface; and enhanced reporting capabilities via a Splunk integration.
Easing legal-hold handoff
The company’s legal hold app makes it easier for litigation support staff to identify, preserve and collect electronically stored information (ESI). Instead of relying on IT teams to serve up end-user data during eDiscovery, the legal hold web app empowers legal departments to run the process themselves, reducing litigation expenses.
“Rapid changes in technology and software, and the nearly universal shift to electronically stored information, has made eDiscovery increasingly complex and expensive. Amidst this shifting eDiscovery environment, many organizations are moving to simplify and standardize their procedures, bringing phases of the eDiscovery process in house-in particular, legal hold. But legal hold processes are laborious and disruptive, often requiring physical collection of employee devices or HDDs,” said Jason Buffington, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group.”IT organizations of all sizes would be well-served to look for ways to integrate their data protection processes and information governance strategies-including proactive communication and collaboration between IT teams and legal or compliance teams. Code42’s new legal hold functionality is designed to enable those exact scenarios, while simplifying the processes and, as a byproduct, unlocking more value and agility out of their data protection solution.“
Data migrations-from days to mere minutes
In response to customer demand for simpler, faster data migration-which is a perennial IT resource drain-new functionality in Code42 5.0 streamlines technology refresh and assures all end-user data is protected before, during and after migration. The data migration features ensure that files and folder structures move across platforms, and individual device settings and preferences transfer automatically with the Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT), reducing time spent on reconfiguration by end users and IT staff.
“The time and resource savings that Code42’s CrashPlan delivers for our data migrations is beyond impressive,” said Michael Bowers, team leader, infrastructure, American Fidelity Assurance. “The software is fast, reliable and virtually eliminates migration-related downtime for our account managers, and provides time savings to our entire IT staff. Migrations that used to take days are now accomplished in just 30 minutes, and every bit of data is fully protected and accounted for throughout the process.“
Revamped user experience and rich reporting with Splunk
The company’s 5.0’s new user interface offers a simplified workflow and faster, self-service backup and file recovery, making it easier to use and more appealing to end users, accelerating enterprise-wide adoption.
For IT administrators, the release features a integration with Splunk-a powerful data aggregation, analysis and reporting tool-to give customers an instant, comprehensive view of infrastructure performance. The Splunk integration provides meaningful, actionable insights on the flow of data and status of operations in aggregate as well as a single device.
“For employees to buy into using endpoint data protection technology, products must have easy-to-use user self-service that saves them time and effort,” said Phil Goodwin, research director, IDC. “Moreover, the self-service features should free up IT staff from responding to routine file or data restore tasks. Code42 CrashPlan 5.0 is designed to provide this kind of functionality that in the end protects corporate data, while improving the productivity of both IT administrators and end users.”
