Next Wave of Nexenta OpenSDS Innovation for VMware

Simplified management, advanced automation and real-time analytic capabilities

Nexenta Systems, Inc. announced its next wave of OpenSDS innovation for VMware solutions, and enhanced Vmware, Inc.‘s interoperability for its entire portfolio.

NEXENTA_nfusion-stackNexentaStor, the company’s SDS solution, along with NexentaEdge and NexentaFusion, together provide the foundation for a high performance, highly scalable, simple to manage Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC).

The company has a track record of deployments across a diverse set of industries, including higher education, hosting, media and virtual servers. Customers have realized millions of dollars in cost savings, exponential increases in performance, and the improved flexibility and scalability required to support growing data volumes.

Additional features of NexentaStor include:

  • Unified File (NFS and SMB) and Block (FC and iSCSI) services

  • Built on ZFS for enterprise grade data integrity, scale and performance

  • Scales from 10’s of terabytes to petabytes

  • Unlimited file system sizes

  • Inline data reduction for additional storage cost savings

  • Unlimited space optimized snapshots and clones

  • Periodic asynchronous long distance replication

  • Interoperability with VMware environments (VAAI support, vCenter plug-in, etc.)

NexentaStor 5.0 connects NexentaFusion and VMware vCenter Server to deliver simplified deployment, configuration and on-going management of Software-Defined Storage infrastructures, large and small NexentaStor’s new, built-from-the-ground-up, high performance management framework provides an easy to progr, self-documenting REST API for new levels of orchestration and integration with end-user and partner ecosystems. For VMware environments, NexentaStor builds on its existing VAAI Block support with a new vCenter plug-in, enabling multi-tenant management of NexentaStor systems, deployed on physical hardware or in VMs for easy to scale multi-tenant file services.

At VMworld 2015, Nexenta showcased:

  • NexentaStor 5.0 and NexentaFusion for simplified management, automation and real-time performance analytics of OpenSDS storage infrastructure

  • High performanc block and file services ideal for any cloud storage needs, near-line archive and generic file sharing use cases

  • Multi-tenant management of virtualized NexentaStor 5.0 storage with vCenter Plug-in for vSphere 6, enabling simple management of advanced virtual NAS services

  • Upcoming NexentaStor 5.0 support for vSphere Virtual Volumes

  • NexentaEdge, which provides scale-out iSCSI block storage with inline deduplication and compression for vSphere, highlighting NexentaEdge’s market leading performance capabilities for VM storage for both VMware and OpenStack clouds

  • NexentaConnect for VMware Virtual SAN, offering full featured, easy to deploy, file services for a VMware powered hyper-converged infrastructure

  • vCloud Air for NexentaStor and NexentaEdge, allowing a simple, cost-effective solution to transition storage environments to the cloud

  • Scale-out object storage with NexentaEdge to support VMware Integrated OpenStack (VIO) deployments

At VMworld 2015, we demonstrated Nexenta’s continued leadership in the field of OpenSDS and gave VMware users a close look at how Nexenta can help them simplify and optimize their vSphere deployments,” said Thomas Cornely, chief product officer, Nexenta. “Nexenta OpenSDS is changing the economics of storage and our upcoming NexentaStor 5.0 and NexentaFusion releases will make it much easier for customers to make the transition to an all Software-Defined Data Center.

VMware and Nexenta share a vision of enabling IT to break down physical barriers that currently binds data to specific hardware in order to drive greater operational efficiency and availability at lower costs,” said Skip Bacon, VP, products, storage and availability, VMware. “VMware and its partners continue to work closely to enable customers to realize the benefits of software-defined storage.

In partnership with Nexenta, we have already achieved a near 200% performance increase compared to similar hyper-scale cloud service offerings, and are setting the performance standard for VMs and cloud hosting services,” said Chris Orlando, co-founder and CSMO, ScaleMatrix, Inc. “We look forward to continuing to leveraging Nexenta’s market leading storage solution to provide more flexibility, control, and performance to our hybrid colocation, cloud, and managed service clients nationwide.

The need for better alignment between the data center and the broader business needs is driving organizations to look for cost-effective storage solutions that streamline storage management and increase agility of data center staff,” said Eric Sheppard, research director, storage practice, IDC. “NexentaStor 5.0, with support for VMware integration, offers a highly scalable software-defined storage solution that helps address exactly these core issues.

Our partnership with Nexenta has already provided customers with immense value, allowing storage environments to scale to different floors, buildings and cities via the NexentaStor MetroHA stretch cluster,” said Tim Klein, CEO, ATTO Technology, Inc. “The introduction of NexentaStor 5.0 will deliver additional benefit, offering ease of management unavailable anywhere else in the market.

The combination of Nexenta’s software-defined storage software and Dell server and storage solutions allows us to offer customers a variety of performance and capacity-optimized configurations to handle large-scale virtualization and file-based workload requirements,” said Alan Atkinson, VP and GM, Dell Storage. “We expect NexentaStor 5.0 to deliver excellent value to our shared customers, further simplifying deployment and on-going management of their software-defined storage infrastructure.

As a storage leader, we are proud to work with Nexenta to deliver market-leading software-defined storage technologies,” said Renate Quigley, SVP, product marketing, HGST, Inc. “Utilizing our industry-leading HDD drives and flash solutions, NexentaStor and NexentaEdge deliver greater capacity and scalability, while lowering TCO and increasing performance. Our technology, as seen in their VMworld demos, enable companies like Nexenta and server builders like Supermicro to create a high-performance and high-density compute infrastructure.

As a leading worldwide full service systems integrator that delivers data center infrastructure and cloud solutions, we see Software-Defined Storage and the innovation NexentaStor is delivering to be in line with what our customers are asking for,” said David Cantu, co-founder and COO, Redapt, Inc. “NexentaStor 5.0 combined with solutions like the Dell SC280 are allowing Redapt to offer best-of-breed technology solutions that lower TCO and providing maximum investment protection.

We’re happy to partner with Nexenta to package their a virtualized multi-tenant block and file software-solution with our InfiniFlash storage system to provide customers with the flexibility and performance needed to manage today’s growing data volumes,” said Ravi Swaminathan, VP and GM, enterprise systems and software solutions, SanDisk Corporation. We’re confident that together, the NexentaStor 5.0 and InfiniFlash will continue to drive value for VMware customers.

Supermicro’s Industry leading storage platforms optimized for Enterprise, Data Center, cloud and VMware environments maximize performance, density, efficiency and reliability while lowering overall TCO,” said Don Clegg, VP, marketing and business development, Super Micro Computer, Inc.. “Along with vSphere 6.0 and NexentaStor 5.0 software-defined storage technologies, we enable rapid and efficient deployment of highly scalable solutions to accelerate the most challenging applications in highly distributed and dynamic workload environments.
