Imation Assigned Two Patents

Secure removable drive system, magnetic media servo writing

Secure removable drive system
Imation Corp., Oakdale, MN, has been assigned a patent (8,949,622) developed by Dowd, Alan, White Bear Lake, MN, for a “secure removable drive system.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “A data storage system comprises a removable drive with memory for storing data, and an identifier for identifying the removable data cartridge. A host computer can be coupled in data communication with the removable data cartridge, with a driver for performing data operations thereon. The driver is configured to perform the data operations with encryption, in the presence of the identifier, and to perform the data operations without the encryption, in the absence of the identifier.

The patent application was filed on January 9, 2013 (13/737,503).

Magnetic media servo writing
Imation Corp., Oakdale, MN,
has been assigned a patent (8,947,802) developed by Johnson, Douglas W., Stillwater, MN, Dornfeld, Roni J., Hugo, MN, and Rothermel, Stephen J., Roseville, MN, for a “methods and systems for magnetic media servo writing.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “A method comprises generating first and second magnetic field components in a magnetic medium, the second magnetic field component substantially opposite the first. A pattern is written onto the magnetic medium, and a signal is generated by reading the pattern. The magnitude of the second magnetic field component is controlled based on an asymmetry of the signal.

The patent application was filed on February 3, 2014 (14/170,916 ).
