Access Community Health Network Deployed Actifio

Virtualizing copy data including Epic System Electronic Health Record

Actifio, Inc., a copy data virtualization company, announced that its platform has been deployed by Access Community Health Network (ACCESS), one of the nation’s largest networks of community-based health centers.

Access Community Health Network

ACCESS implemented Actifio to protect and accelerate provisioning for their Electronic Health Record System (Epic) and other critical IT applications, replacing multiple backup and de-duplication products with a SLA-driven platform.

ACCESS is a federally qualified health center (FQHC) that provides preventive and primary health care services at 35 health centers located throughout Chicago, Cook, and DuPage counties. Located within medically underserved communities, it serves as the medical home for more than 175,000 patients each year. Founded in the early 1990s, it is accredited by Joint Commission and strives to improve the health and wellness of the communities it serves.

Before Actifio, the health care provider struggled with data growing too fast, application recovery that took too long, and provisioning that was too hard.

Using Actifio, ACCESS decoupled its application data from its physical infrastructure, enabling them to protect, recover, refresh, and migrate Epic and other application data when and where they need to. The company has been able to offload excess copies of application data from expensive, performance-optimized production systems designed to support health care staff engaged in patient care.

ACCESS has received many organizational benefits from Actifio. For instance, it:

  • Expects significant operational and capital savings;
  • Reduced weekly data refresh times by 80%;
  • Provided on-demand environments for application support teams;
  • Shrank restore times by a factor of 5;
  • Implemented DR capabilities with alternative emergency production failover; and
  • Gained flexible and easy-to-use data migration capability for application modernization.

At ACCESS, we face challenges from an increased patient caseload and evolutions in the Medicaid policies,” said Barbara Wallace, technical director, ACCESS. “We’re supporting nearly a thousand users daily on Epic and have to run a very efficient technology organization to keep pace. Actifio has helped us drastically improve the efficiency of a number of our IT processes, especially in data protection and refreshing our Epic release and support environments. In the end, Actifio has helped us improve the performance of our infrastructure, and the resiliency of our IT services, so we can focus on improving the quality and efficiency of the care we give our patients.

We’re honored to be playing a small role in helping ACCESS fulfill their worthwhile mission,” said Actifio CEO Ash Ashutosh. “More and more health care providers are learning they can save money, time, and headaches by managing data down from their applications instead of up from their infrastructure. It’s nice to know that money and time will be applied to improve the lives of those in need.
