48TB with 8 bays

Idealstor LLC announced a removable 6TB WORM disk for use in their four- or eight-bay WORM appliances.

This new disk is an increase of 33% capacity over previous generations of WORM disks and yields a staggering 48TB capacity for the eight-bay WORM appliance. Idealstor encourages a trade-up for all current optical jukebox users to their disk-based WORM appliances as optical jukeboxes are becoming obsolete.

Refrigerator-sized jukeboxes with limited capacity and expensive, slow media are being outdated. With a scalable solution, the company offers a fast and large WORM-compliant appliance. The archiving solution has speeds of up to 6Gb/s and seek times of less than 10ms. Additionally, the solution provides the reliability of disk media and the removable cartridges are designed to be repeatedly ejected.

The need for gigantic, expensive and technologically antiquated optical jukeboxes is gone,” said Nandan Arora, CTO, Idealstor. “Let’s face it, technology evolves and optical jukebox manufacturers haven’t kept up. Idealstor uses a 6TB WORM disk with our standard rackmount appliances. It’s tens of thousands of dollars less than the average optical juke system and has a capacity of 48TB raw data. Plus, it’s completely scalable. We beat both optical jukeboxes and tape libraries in size, speed, reliability and portability.

Idealstor said that optical jukebox technologies are stagnating and that many vendors already have left the market creating a hardship on customers.

From now through December 24, it is offering an incentive to IT professionals using optical jukeboxes to trade up to its WORM solution.
