Symantec Assigned Two Patents

Controlling access to SAN, storage reclamation

Symantec Operating Corp., Mountain View, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,732,354) developed by Tommi Salli, Mountain View, CA, for a “method and apparatus for controlling access to a SAN.”

The abstract of the patent published b the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “A method and apparatus for controlling access to a storage area network among a group of hosts in a distributed computing environment. A host requests access to the storage area network by issuing an input/output request, and the input/output request is intercepted at the dynamic multipath (DMP) layer. The DMP layer checks the input/output request against an access control list. The DMP layer can grant or deny the input/output request from the host system. If the input/output request is granted, then the DMP layer passes on the input/output request to the HBA driver layer and the host is allowed to access the storage area network. If the request to access the storage area network is denied, the DMP management layer can initiate an appropriate response, such as a security procedure or generation of an error message alerting a user the request has been denied.”

The patent application was filed on Sept. 30, 2005 (11/240,188).

Storage reclamation
Symantec Corp., Mountain View, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,751,768) developed by four co-inventors for “storage reclamation systems and methods.”

The co-inventors are Ragupathi Malige, San Jose, CA, Ryan Robert Lefevre, Sunnyvale, CA, Edwin Frederick Menze III, Portland, OR, and Sunil Kumar Tekkatte Subramanya, Sunnyvale, CA.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “Storage systems and methods are presented. In one embodiment, a storage reclamation method comprises performing a potential reclamation identification process, wherein the potential reclamation identification process includes determining if there is the potential for reclaiming storage resources; performing a reclamation process, wherein reclamation is performed on storage resources identified by the potential reclamation identification process as being eligible for reclamation, and wherein the storage resources correspond to free space associated with a data file; and performing a valid free space indication process, wherein a valid free space indication process includes forwarding a valid free space indication recognizable to an application as a valid free space indication when the application attempts to direct a read to the storage spaces reclaimed by the reclamation process.”

The patent application was filed on April 29, 2011 (13/098,294).
