Mimecast for Mac

And upgrade of Large File Send

Mimecast Services Ltd has brought its suite of products to enterprise Mac users via a native app, Mimecast for Mac.

The firm also has announced improvements to its Large File Send.

Both are available.

Mimecast for Mac
It enables enterprise users to benefit from cloud services previously limited to Outlook for Windows or web portal users. This app gives users access to their email when their primary service goes down, search of everything in their personal email archive, and spam management. It also enables them to send large files with large file send.

IT administrators also get the benefit of managing their Mac users alongside their Windows infrastructure from within the same administration console.

Orlando Scott-Cowley, director, technology marketing, Mimecast, commented: “IT teams manage complex environments that mix PCs and Macs with multiple mobile devices. Securing data across these heterogeneous environments can be a real headache. Our new Mimecast for Mac app gives end users easy access to email continuity services as well as self-service email archive search and security services. With Large File Send also available via the Mac app, IT administrators now know that some of their most storage-hungry users can exchange big files within a safe corporate IT framework, and with no need to resort to consumer cloud services.

Large File Send
IT administrators are concerned that the use of third-party cloud services puts their organisation at higher risk of breaching confidentiality, data security, regulatory or compliance rules. They also recognise that users need to send increasingly large files. This keeps this data under IT control in support of organisational security and data leakage policies. This is achieved without the need for more investment in on-premise infrastructure, unsustainable increases in network traffic or acceptance of the risk from uncontrollable cloud services.

Users can send and receive large files whether or not the recipient is a Mimecast customer. The file remains protected and archived on the cloud service throughout the exchange.

Files sent and received are virus-scanned and checked against enterprise-defined rules for data leak prevention before being stored in the corporate email archive within the cloud platform. This allows for e-discovery and supports compliance as all enterprise data resides in a single archive. It also reduces the traffic over the corporate network caused by the sending and receiving of these large files – the file is saved once to the cloud and shared from there, never hitting the corporate infrastructure.

Scott-Cowley commented: “Organisations are battling with a significant security and corporate governance threat from users turning to external cloud file sharing and storage services. Mimecast Large File Send eliminates this problem. Once installed, users have no need, desire or excuse to circumvent corporate rules and put their corporate data or organisation at risk. IT administrators can relax knowing they have regained control of the data and that their users have the functionality they want integrated into one, easy-to-use app.
