Including two Storwize V7000 for 56TB of storage, TS3500 tape library and TSM

IBM Corporation announced that Peruvian mining company Minera Chinalco Peru S.A. has purchased an IBM server, storage and virtualization solution to provide a technology platform that supports their expanding operations in the country.

This solution is being deployed in the client’s main data center in Lima as well as its mining location in the Junin Region. Minera Chinalco Peru selected the solution because IBM was able to provide a customized, flexible solution that is superior to other providers.

Chinalco replaced their current installed technology with the new solution composed of IBM System x servers, Storwize storage systems, and virtualization software that allow the client to cover all their processing needs and deploy applications in an agile, fast, secure and highly available environment. This will allow the mining company to optimize the performance of its IT infrastructure while reducing their operation costs and a virtualization strategy creates a path to cloud adoption in the future.

«We needed a stable, efficient platform to support business operations and our expansion goals, both in Lima and at the mining operations.” said Willy Coronado, IT manager, Minera Chinalco Peru. ‘We were seeking a strategic partner that is flexible enough to meet our IT requirements, and IBM’s System x and storage solutions will play a crucial role in meeting our future goals.

The solution acquired by Minera Chinalco Peru replaces their current technology with 16 BladeCenter HX5 blade servers and 2 BladeCenter H chassis servers at the Lima data center, and 34 BladeCenter HX5 blade servers and 3 BladeCenter H chassis servers with redundant components at the Junin mine site.

Each location has one Storwize V7000 cluster providing a combined total of 56TB of storage, with a TS3500 tape library and Tivoli Storage Management software providing backup at each site. At both sites, VMware virtualization software is being installed for some systems.

Our System x servers and storage offerings provide the highest performance and customer satisfaction in the industry, providing the ideal platform for this project,” said Giancarlo Bustamante, System x sales specialist, IBM Peru.

Minera Chinalco Peru is part of the Aluminium Corporation of China, known as Chinalco, one of the largest companies in China. It is the world’s second largest alumina producer and the third largest producer of aluminum. It operates the Toromocho copper project in Peru, which is located 90 miles east of Lima in the Junin Region.
