4TB HDD for IBM XIV Gen3

Scaling up to 325TB

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 214 for machine types 2810 and 2812 now supports 4TB SAS HDD in XIV interface and data modules.

The XIV system scales up to 325TB in configurations of 4TB disk drives, including 48GB RAM per module. These systems enable 33% more capacity than a system with 3TB drives in the same footprint while maintaining a similar level of performance.

XIV Gen3 with software version 11.3.0 is designed to provide application-transparent movement of volumes between XIV systems by using IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility. This Hyper-Scale capability is complemented by IBM Hyper-Scale Manager, previously named XIV Multi-System Manager and available since October 3, 2012. Hyper-Scale Manager provides a scalable GUI that enables integrated and consolidated management of multiple XIV systems across the enterprise.

Key prerequisites

  • XIV Gen3 Model 214 with XIV Storage System software version 11.3.0, or later, installed.
  • Intermixing of port bandwidth between 10GbE and 1Gb within the same system is not supported (mutually exclusive).
  • Partially populated XIV Gen3 that are shipped from the factory with any of the raw capacity per drive options must continue to be populated with the same raw capacity per drive option.
  • Intermixing of any of these capacity points options in a single XIV Gen3 frame is not allowed: 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, or 4TB.
