Newcomer in All-SSD System: JBOD Storage Solutions

1U, $100,000 for 32TB

JBOD Storage Solutions, LLC, announced that XBOD, eXtreme Bunch of Drives, is shipping with configurations of 8, 16 and 32TB with pricing at $100,000 for 32TB.

Timed to take advantage of the convergence of the big data – fast data market, XBOD provides flexibility and optimum bandwidth to the flash SSD drives for use by high performance servers, virtualization servers, clusters, SANS and NAS devices.

XBOD is both OS and host system agnostic with no custom drivers required. It’s compatible with standard OSs including Linux, Windows, and Apple Mac OS, as well as parallel file systems and cluster solutions such as Lustre.

"Our solution is perfect for the convergence of big data and fast data. There is a need for screaming-fast storage solutions that provide flexibility at a competitive price. Our flexibility allows for architects to use this as front-end storage caching for hot data, for others to use it in heavy analytics applications requiring large amounts of high speed, low-latency flash storage and finally others may use it when needing a smaller footprint, but still need high performance," said Gary Webb, founder of JBOD. "Data centers and HPC deployments are looking to improve the performance of their storage subsystems because of the huge amount of transactional processing being required by financial government and retail users as well as within compute-intensive scientific and video-centric systems. With XBOD, we designed a solution to provide the needed flexibility and optimum bandwidth to the SSD drives for big data – fast data applications at a competitive price."

The sixty four 6Gbps Gen3 SATA solid state flash modules in a single 1U form-factor provide 3.84M IO/s of high speed storage for HPC, high speed video, analytics processing applications, virtualization servers, logistics centers, and data-centers requiring fast data speed and big data capacity. In addition, by consolidating the performance of 12,800 enterprise HDDs into a single 1U NAND Flash Storage Accelerator, a single low-power XBOD replaces numerous racks of standard HDD arrays or multiple bays of SSD drives allowing data centers to reduce their overall footprint by more than 500%, lowering their operating costs.

The XBOD features and benefits include:

Speed and Performance

  • XBOD provides 3.84 MIO/s with 33GB/s total aggregated max. bandwidth.
  • The SSD flash technology reduces the latency and access times associated with standard motor driven HDDs and the advanced parallel NAND architecture delivers performance for transaction intensive applications.
  • Each of the 64 SSD modules is capable of 60,000 IO/s at a data rate of 520MB/s compared to 100-300 IO/s from a typical high performance HDD. At 3.84 MIO/s, a fully configured 1U XBOD has the raw IO/s speed of 12,800 such high performance HDDs.

Density

  • A single low power XBOD replaces numerous racks of standard 3.5" HDD arrays or multiple bays of 2.5" SSD drives allowing data centers to reduce their overall footprint by over 500%.
  • A single XBOD enclosure can replace ten SSD JBOD enclosures using 2.5" SSD drives.
  • The performance afforded by the XBOD can substantially change the topology of a datacenter by further removing the need for the controllers and switches frequently used to increase performance by short-stroking the HDD drives.
  • A high speed server and XBOD can be configured in a 2-4U rack space, affording a substantial cost savings and lower operating cost

Scalability

  • The number of modules are scalable from 1 to 64 pluggable SSD devices in a single 1U enclosure.
  • Start with a few SATADIMM SSD modules and add more capacity as needed.
  • Standard configurations of 8, 16, 32TB are available.
  • Current configurations utilize 512GB MLC flash devices. Other sizes and configurations including eMLC and SLC modules are custom ordered.
  • The XBOD chassis is capable of supporting higher density SSD modules as they become available.
  • Unlike PCIe SSD card devices, the XBOD can be attached to or used to support multiple servers, clusters, SANS, or external switches, as well as a single HPC.
