Penguin
Computing, Inc., in enterprise
computing solutions, announced the availability of the Icebreaker CS storage
platform for large scale-out cloud storage deployments.
The Icebreaker CS is an integrated and pre-configured appliance
that incorporates Scality’s RING Organic storage software. It will be available
directly from Penguin as well as through Scality,
Inc.
The Icebreaker CS is based on Penguin Computing’s
Icebreaker 4860 storage server. The system offers high
storage density of 240TB of raw data in 4U form factor. It is powered by an Xeon E5-2600 processor and configured with 128GB of RAM. The system is
offered with two configuration options featuring SATA HDDs for capacity focused
deployments and a mix of SSDs and SATA drives for deployments that require
maximum performance.
The Icebreaker CS solution combines RING Organic storage software
with Icebreaker 4860 storage servers.
"Performance,
availability and scalability requirements of large scale cloud businesses
cannot be met with traditional IT approaches to storage, that typically excel
in one of these areas and fall short in another," said Charles
Wuischpard, CEO, Penguin Computing. "To
meet the demands of our customers that require storage solutions at the PB
scale we based our large scale storage appliance Icebreaker CS on software from
Scality. With its distributed no-shared architecture and its sophisticated
Advanced Resilience Configuration, Scality RING offers excellent storage
scalability and great availability without compromising performance."
Scality RING is based on a distributed, object based
storage architecture that implements a ‘shared nothing’ approach without any
single point of failure. It scales to billions of files and zettabytes
of data and addresses the specific challenges associated with large scale storage
where high data availability cannot be achieved through RAID configurations and
data replication is costly.
It delivers high level of availability with its Advanced
Resilience Configuration (ARC), a method based on erasure coding technology.
With a 30% redundancy ratio a single 19" Icebreaker CS rack can store over
1.8PBs of data with ‘six nines’ of durability. The system is also
self-healing, constantly ‘scrubbing’ data in the background.
"Penguin has tremendous experience
in building and deploying scalable infrastructures," says Jérôme
Lecat, CEO, Scality."We are very
proud that RING was chosen after a rigorous selection process as the software
to power Penguin cloud storage products. In the software defined datacenter,
the software would be nothing without proper underlying hardware. Penguin’s
Icebreaker is one of the densest platforms on the market today; embedding
Scality RING, it offers one of the cheapest active storage solutions on the
planet, delivered by a company that has always been devoted to scale."
Organizations with multiple sites can achieve higher levels of availability with RING’s geo-redundancy features. For
enterprises storing data sets that need to be accessed at the highest levels of
performance and other ‘cold’ data sets that are accessed less frequently RING provides auto-tiering capabilities. Applications that access data
stored on the Icebreaker CS can use a unified data interface capable of
delivering local and remote, object and file access.
