Seagate 4TB HDD With Four Disks Only
Low cost unit at 5,900rpm
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on April 3, 2013 at 3:05 pmSeagate Technology didn’t publish a press release on the subject but you can find the new product on its web site.
The new 3.5-inch desktop ST4000DM000 model is the first 4TB HDD with only 4 platters – and not five -. The rotational speed is only 5,900rpm, and not 7,200rpm as usual, with a standard 64MB cache.
The advantages are a low operating power (7.5W) and a good price because Seagate has eliminated one disk and two heads to get 4TB.
At $190 at newegg.com, this 6Gb SATA internal unit is a good fit for standard desktop PCs, home NAS, external drives, archiving and surveillance applications.
This device will not change drastically the industry. The first 4TB HDD was launched in 2011 and nobody could increase this today’s record capacity.
Note that HGST also reveals in 2011 a disk drive at 1TB per platter two years ago.
