 Rodriguez, currently technology management consultant and professor of electrical and computer engineering and engineering management at the University of Colorado in Boulder, is a pioneer in the development of tape technologies across four decades, being co-founder of StorageTek in 1969, Exabyte in 1985, Datasonix in 1992, and Ecrix in 1996. He was also chairman of Vixel and Sweetwater Filters. He began his career in 1963 at IBM as VP in charge of optical disc.
