HGST Assigned Two Patents

HDD with solder preform hermetic seal, encryption using intermediate key

HDD with solder preform hermetic seal

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, has been assigned a patent (8,335,050) developed by Iraj Kavosh, and Kirk B. Price, San Jose, CA, for a "disk drive with a solder preform hermetic seal."

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A method for forming a seal for hermetically sealing a hard disk drive assembly. The method includes forming a solder channel within a top cover of a disk drive enclosure and disposing a solder preform on a base of the disk drive enclosure such that the solder preform aligns with the solder channel when the top cover is positioned on the base."

The patent application was filed on April 3, 2007 (11/732,683).

Encrypting data on storage devices using intermediate key

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, has been assigned a patent (8,315,394) developed by five co-inventors for "techniques for encrypting data on storage devices using an intermediate key."

The co-inventors are Marco Sanvido, Belmont, CA, Anand Krishnamurthi Kulkarni, Cyril Guyot, Richard M.H. New, San Jose, CA, and Jorge Campello de Souza, Cupertino, CA

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A data storage device encrypts data stored in non-volatile memory using a bulk encryption key. The data storage device uses a key derivation function to generate an initial encryption key. The data storage device then wraps an intermediate encryption key with the initial encryption key and stores the wrapped intermediate key in the non-volatile memory. The data storage device wraps the bulk encryption key with the intermediate encryption key and stores the wrapped bulk encryption key in the non-volatile memory. The data storage device can unwrap the wrapped intermediate key to generate the intermediate encryption key using the initial encryption key. The data storage device can unwrap the wrapped bulk encryption key to generate the bulk encryption key using the intermediate encryption key. The data storage device decrypts data stored in the non-volatile memory using the bulk encryption key."

The patent application was filed on Oct. 24, 2007 (11/923,123).
