RAID Inc.: New RAID Level for Xanadu Arrays

Relies on larger disk pool rather than volume group.

RAID Incorporated, an end-to-end customized solutions provider in HPC, big data, and virtualized environments, announced a new RAID level for the Xanadu series.

This new RAID approach relies on a larger disk pool rather than a volume group. There are no decisions about RAID level, resiliency, load balancing or hot spares. Volume data is distributed across randomly selected drives in the pool; just add drives to increase pool capacity with automatic data redistribution to maintain equilibrium.

Upon disk failure, segments on other disks are read to recreate data making rebuild times 10x faster.

"This technology is ideal for the most basic environments that need RAID technology because of its ease of use and resiliency to supercomputers that demand extreme uptime and performance," said Dr. Nilay Roy, RAID Inc. CTO.

Benefits:

  • Simplified storage and data management: no hot spares or raid-level decisions, easy expansion
  • Storage cost efficiency: just add storage to areas that need it, eliminates stranded capacity
  • Data protection: shorter rebuild times and reduces the risk to multiple disk failures
  • Performance: eliminates hot spots by spreading the volume over more disks
