Adam Continuity Chose EVault in UK

For cloud backup services

End users experienced recovery speeds five times faster than tape with EVault, Inc.‘s cloud backup services according to Adam Continuity.

The provider of business and data continuity solutions expects most of its clients to make a transition to cloud connected backup within the next five years.

Adam Continuity chose EVault, in online and offsite data backup and recovery for small, medium, and large businesses, after experiencing frustration with its then backup solution provider.

"We already offered our own laptop continuity solution to clients and found that many wanted a similar solution for their servers," explains Ronan McCurtin, director of sales, Adam Continuity. "But at that time EVault wasn’t our first port of call. We worked with two other vendors first, neither of which met our own, or more importantly our client’s expectations."

While both vendors offered a satisfactory solution, one fell down on its pricing structure and both had difficulty meeting the RTOs of clients in certain situations.

"We found that the vendors were able to quickly back up single files and small servers, but that the larger the volume of data being stored, the slower the process became. As most businesses own more and more data, we couldn’t see the relationships being sustainable," comments McCurtin. "Our ethos is to develop long-standing relationships with our clients, so were extra cautious in our next choice of supplier."

Approaching EVault, Adam Continuity was understandably wary of committing to another vendor without testing its technology. Therefore the company  started by testing the backup solution on its own servers, assessing whether it could meet its backup and recovery time objectives before selecting additional beta testers. The beta trials were a success with one user finding that, while the previous vendor’s solution had taken 84 hours to recover its systems, EVault’s took 12 hours. Another rehearsal, which historically took five days, took 26 hours.

"Our clients have been absolutely delighted with EVault, and so are we. EVault has made it clear that it wants to work with us, and that’s important. We feel supported by our EVault contacts and know that they understand our business and how we fit into the market. We now have 25 clients using EVault’s cloud services and expect this number to grow rapidly. Before working with EVault we’d become disillusioned about the solutions available, but now we’re feeling excited again. It’s helping us develop our business and has given us the confidence to move forward in the knowledge that we are using the correct solution," says McCurtin.

Adam Continuity notes that the backup market is changing, and this is leading to an increase in the number of opportunities it has to recommend and sell cloud connected solutions. At this point in time the company  has nearly 50 other client opportunities in the pipeline.

But why the shift away from tape? McCurtin believes that the convenience of cloud is a huge selling point, while the risk and cost of tape storage is causing many organisations to sit up and take notice of the cloud for the first time: "The cost of tape is substantial because of man hours required, the software, logistics, the cost of tape libraries, tape devices and the price of the tapes themselves. There is also the cost of maintaining all of these items for a minimum of 7 years. One misaligned tape head or worn tape and data can be lost forever. That’s a risk that our clients are no longer willing to take. Clients are impressed with the efficiency of the EVault solution. They are no longer waiting to catalogue tapes for restores or waiting for tapes to be returned from their tape storage provider and the time taken on week long rehearsals has now been reduced to one day; the client only being involved to verify the restores.

"Our clients also like the end to end nature of our solution with EVault. They use EVault to backup to the cloud, and then use Adam Continuity to recover their data and servers onto equipment before delivering it to a location of their choice or a recovery centre. This shows that EVault’s solution has been well planned, unlike those of so many other providers."

Adam Continuity has noted that the Olympics and other national events are taking their toll on the backup needs of customers with at least one tape collections company  branding tape collection during this time as a ‘non-essential journey’.

"No wonder clients want to move to the cloud," McCurtin reasons.

The relationship between Adam Continuity and EVault is still in its infancy, but both companies are eager to grow the association in the coming months and years.

Johan Pellicaan, MD EMEA at EVault concludes: "We are excited to develop our relationship with Adam Continuity. EVault has a number of plans in the coming year and Adam Continuity is keen to be at the forefront of these. The feedback we have received from the company, and its clients, has been incredibly positive and we continue to look forward to working with them on a daily basis."
