… SVC Software V6.4.0 …
80% primary data reduction through embedded real-time compression for blocks
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on June 5, 2012 at 2:26 pmIBM Corp.‘s System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) Version 6.4 can help:
- When storage requirements growing at a fast rate
- When the costs necessary to manage storage requirements are taking over the IT budget
SVC offers a solution to these problems by supporting a flexible, responsive, and efficient storage environment. It is designed to deliver the benefits of storage virtualization in environments from large enterprises to SMBs.
It improves storage efficiency by compressing data by as much as 80% through embedded real-time compression for block storage, enabling up to five times as much data to be stored in the same physical disk space. Unlike other approaches to compression, IBM Real-time Compression is designed to be used with active primary data such as production databases and email systems, expanding the range of candidate data that can benefit from compression. Real-time Compression operates as data is written to disk avoiding the need to store uncompressed data while awaiting compression.
Data mobility has been enhanced with flexibility for non-disruptive volume moves. Previous versions of SVC provided the ability to move volumes non-disruptively between the nodes in an I/O group. It now supports moving volumes anywhere within a clustered system while avoiding disruption of host access to storage.
SVC systems with 10GbE ports now support attachment to next-generation Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) networks using FCoE. This support enables connecting SVC to servers for host attachment and to other SVC systems for clustering or for mirroring using FC or FCoE interfaces using these networks. The same ports may also be used for iSCSI server connections.
Key prerequisites
If the IBM System Storage Productivity Center (SSPC) is not yet installed at the customer location, it must be ordered with the SVC V6.4 order. It must be ordered via AAS, whether the SVC Software is ordered via AAS or Passport Advantage.
