EMC Provides Foundation for Tulip Telecom Cloud Storage

EMC Corporation announced that Tulip Telecom will provide managed on-demand storage services and Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) using EMC unified storage and backup and recovery technologies from the Tulip Data City in Bangalore, the world’s third-largest data center and Asia’s biggest.

Tulip’s cloud-based storage and backup service offerings are powered by EMC’s VNX unified storage, Avamar and Data Domain technologies for storage and backup and recovery, enabling Tulip to offer enterprises managed services to address the complexities related to storage and backup.

On-demand storage and BaaS are cloud computing-based business models wherein information storage, backup, archival and de-duplication technologies are offered to customers ‘as per need’ and in a ‘pay-as-you-use’" manner.

According to the 2010 IDC Digital Universe Study, sponsored by EMC, digital information in India will grow from 40,000 petabytes to 2.3 million petabytes, twice as fast as the worldwide rate over the next decade (2010 to 2020).

As a result, enterprises of all sizes will face an increasing challenge to store, protect and manage the growing digital information and comply with backup requirements. This liability will only increase as social networking and Web 2.0 technologies continue to impact the enterprise, leading to the adoption of cloud computing solutions for new levels of agility, efficiency and control, and better optimization of capital investments. In a separate research by IDC in 2011, sponsored by EMC, 14% of the surveyed CIOs and key IT decision-makers at Indian organisations were already adopting cloud computing while 76% planned to use cloud computing after six months, indicating a strong uptake for cloud services in India.

Using EMC technologies, Tulip will address the market need for dependable cloud computing solutions for data storage and backup through hosted data centers. Never before have enterprises in India had access to managed services for online storage and backup at the scale that is offered at the Tulip Data City – a data center spread across 0.9 million square feet, with the capacity to house up to 12,000 racks.

• Automated Storage Management and Streamlined Backup and Recovery Processes: Cloud-based on-demand storage and backup and recovery services make the process of backing up easy to accomplish through automation. Users can select what and when they want to backup, and the service does the rest. Furthermore, in the event of catastrophic data loss, users will have backups of all their original files at a separate location so they can restore them with zero downtime.
• Efficiency: Access to IT personnel managed by Tulip and EMC will enable customers plan their IT in an efficient and effective way. This managed services model helps customers minimize their dependency on in-house personnel, reducing personnel-related costs.
