Missing Storage Devices of California Department of Child Support Services
Iron Mountain statement
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on May 3, 2012 at 3:10 pmOn March 29th, the California Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) disclosed that it was unable to account for four computer storage devices containing personal information for approximately 800,000 individuals.
In its press release, the department named Iron Mountain, Inc. as one of the contractors responsible. These storage devices were sent from Colorado to Iron Mountain via a third-party shipping company, in accordance with DCSS instructions.
We believe that while en route to Iron Mountain, the storage devices were displaced from their shipping container and lost; this is evidenced by the fact that a fifth storage device included in the container was found at one of the shipping company’s ‘stray goods’ facilities. While Iron Mountain was the intended recipient, we did not receive the missing storage devices.
Regardless of how these storage devices were lost, DCSS is our customer and the security of their information is of utmost importance. We will do everything we can to help recover these missing devices, working in collaboration with all parties involved.
