Solidarity by GreenBytes, All-SSD iSCSI SAN Array Delivering 120,000 4K IO/s
Up to 13.5TB (60TB effective with de-dupe/compression)
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on February 21, 2012 at 2:57 pmGreenBytes, Inc., announced the Solidarity, a high availability, optimized storage array that offers capacities greater than traditional high-performance disk arrays and is designed to meet the production storage needs of the SME market.
Featuring the GreenBytes GO OS (Globally Optimized Operating System) including inline real-time deduplication and compression, Solidarity packages enterprise-class features into a dual controller unit entirely outfitted with SSD, offering 3.5 TB (15 TB effective) to 13.5 TB (60 TB effective) and capable of delivering 120,000 4K IOPS.
Solidarity enables the SME market to meet all primary and transactional storage missions including virtual infrastructure (VM/VDI) and databases with a single data tier, all-solid state platform. Providing a reduction in power, cooling and rack space, as well as a lower acquisition cost and TCO, Solidarity offers virtual storage pools for single tier storage, eliminating traditional tiering and the need for complicated tiering software processes and heuristics. Additionally, the Solidarity GO OS utilizes Smart Write technology to coalesce writes and transactional/synchronous I/O to maximize system endurance and performance.
Solidarity Features Include:
- GreenBytes GO OS: The GO OS offers customers SAN (iSCSI) connectivity for integrating applications requiring high performance storage. Additionally, the StorageManager administration interface provides graphical tools and wizards to configure, provision iSCSI LUNs and file systems, and subsequent monitoring.
- Inline Primary Deduplication: It offers inline deduplication that can withstand the high I/O write/remove/re-write patterns associated with primary storage missions. Typical data reduction, while variable, can be as high as a 12:1 reduction for certain virtual infrastructure needs and commonly between 5 and 8:1 for databases.
- Block Level Compression: GreenBytes offers both software-based and hardware-accelerated compression options. Compression achieves reduction by as much as 3.6X or more and combines in real time with inline deduplication for greater reduction.
- Global Deduplication/Compression for Replication: It offers a replication capability that not only provides for continuous data protection, but also optimizes network utilization by compressing and deduplicating replication data over the wire.
- Smart Write Coalescing: this technology de-amplifies writes to the array by orders of magnitude. This, in turn, increases the service life of the equipment beyond typical write endurance specifications of MLC SSD used for block and file storage.
- Dual Controllers: Solidarity delivers dual controller high availability features for applications that require this level of availability such as a virtualized iSCSI SAN. The Xeon-based controllers are redundant and can operate independently and are each equipped with four 1 GbE and two 10 GbE network ports for flexible connectivity and redundancy options for customer environments. Controller swaps occur in just a few seconds, facilitating continuity of service objectives.
- iSCSI ThinProvision Space Reclaim: For Windows and VMware iSCSI environments, the systems dynamically return thin provisioned blocks when they are removed from their hosted environments.
- Raw Capacity (Before Deduplication and Compression): From 3.5 TB (15 TB effective) to 13.5 TB (60 TB effective) (Raw capacities are before RAID protection. Effective capacities reflect conservative compression plus deduplication assumptions.)
- Decrease Cost, Increase Performance: Even before deduplication and compression optimizations, Solidarity’s SSD capacity provides better cost per GB of storage than traditional high performance arrays, based on 15K RPM Fiber Channel drives, offering 150X the performance. With deduplication and hardware compression, the cost benefit is 10X.
"As the SME market continues to deploy VDI and VM projects, budget-conscious storage administrators are looking for a total solution that provides high-performance, enterprise-class features and ample capacity," said Deni Connor, principal analyst, Storage Strategies NOW. "With features including high availability and global inline deduplication and compression for replication, the GreenBytes Solidarity platform is a fresh architectural approach to an all-SSD solution and is certainly a product to watch in this growing space."
"Many SME profile customers have diverse storage applications like large enterprises, but have neither the budget nor the staff to purchase and administer a one-of-everything solution," said Matt Aitkenhead, VP, Sales of GreenBytes. "Solidarity provides a complete SSD-powered, single-tier solution for primary storage and virtualization missions that removes complexity and provides orders of magnitude increases of performance and capacity, which are true game changers in the mid-market storage arena."
Solidarity will be available later in Q1.
