Net2Vault Launches Online Backup Solution

To protect data built on NetApp arrays

Net2Vault, in the enterprise cloud backup and disaster recovery market, announced the availability of a cloud backup and recovery solution based on the NetApp, Inc.‘s storage platform.

Net2Vault’s business model is to provide a secure cloud backup target for NetApp customers using native NetApp tools, mitigating the need for offsite tape and enabling the offsite backup to be used for disaster recovery. With the use of NetApp storage encryption (NSE), a full disk encryption technology, Net2Vault is able to provide data-at-rest encryption while still maintaining the data’s native NetApp format. The use of these technologies makes cloud backups efficient and transparent to Net2Vault’s customers, and helps secure their information against disclosure.

"Our customers are increasingly turning to private, public, and hybrid cloud models to keep pace with the demands of their business today and adapt and evolve as their business grows," said Julie Parrish, senior vice president of Global Partner Sales. "Our collaboration with innovative companies such as Net2Vault helps our mutual customers achieve stringent recovery time objectives and recovery point objectives that cloud-based architectures require and that only disk-to-disk backup and recovery can meet."

A NetApp Snapshot copy takes only a few seconds to create-typically less than one second, regardless of the size of the volume or the level of activity on the NetApp storage system. After a Snapshot copy has been created, NetApp SnapMirror software is used to transfer it to Net2Vault’s storage arrays.

Since two snapshot copies taken in sequence only differ by the blocks that have been updated on the disk volume, they are efficient. Unlike other vendors’ snapshots that duplicate the entire volume, a NetApp Snapshot copy incurs no performance overhead and users can store up to 255 snapshot copies per volume. This means that backups can be taken and sent offsite as often as necessary to meet business requirements without impacting the customer’s running applications.

The FIPS 120-2 Level 2 validated hardware encryption implemented by NSE is transparent to NetApp and Net2Vault customers and supports NetApp storage compression and deduplication.

"Through the use of efficient NetApp replication and transparent encryption, Net2Vault saves both transfer time and data storage costs for their customers, while protecting their confidential information," said Brian Maguire, CTO of Net2Vault. "Without NetApp technology, we wouldn’t be able to deliver such an efficient and cost-effective service to our customers."

As NetApp customers’ needs expand for enterprise-class cloud backup and disaster recovery, customers benefit from focus on NetApp products when they select Net2Vault for these services.
