13 drives per U

Nexsan Corp. announced the latest member of its E5000 family of NAS storage systems, the E5510.

Offering more than 1 PB of capacity in a 27U of rack space, the E5510 combines support for both asynchronous and synchronous replication and includes Nexsan’s FASTier SSD caching technology. The new NAS system is for capacity-intensive applications including backup, archiving and primary file storage.

"The E5510 features Nexsan’s latest technological advancements for high capacity, synchronous replication, space efficiency and power conservation," said Gary Watson, CTO, Nexsan. "By offering the ultimate in storage flexibility with enterprise-class features and superior support for virtualized computing environments, the E5510 is a compelling choice for any environment that needs exceptional capacity, flexibility and efficiency."

Newly featured on the E5510 is optional support for both asynchronous and synchronous data replication. The asynchronous data replication feature allows users to configure off-site data replications separately for each storage pool on the primary E5000 system. In addition, the asynchronous data replication feature allows for the manual transfer of data on the E5000 to an external storage device for offline replications. With the synchronous data replication feature, users can mirror all the data contained in a storage pool between a source Nexsan storage system and a target Nexsan storage system-both of which are connected to the E5000 via FC.

The E5510 is the latest addition to Nexsan’s E5000 family of NAS storage systems. It provides a NAS system with the flexibility of between 9 TB and over 1 PB of storage capacity and Nexsan’s storage density, power efficiency, and enterprise reliability. Features include reservation-less snapshots, replication, quotas, AD and LDAP integration, and thin provisioning.

Each member of the E5000 Family offers Nexsan’s patent-pending E-Centre graphical user interface for easy deployment and ongoing management of multiple dispersed systems from a single pane of glass. E5000 storage pools feature virtualized, online capacity expansion so administrators can add capacity as needed without any disruption to users or applications.

Key features of the Nexsan E5000 Family include:

  • FASTier, an exclusive Nexsan feature which leverages multiple tiers of SSD technology to accelerate storage system performance with NL-SAS, SATA or SAS drives – for virtualized operating environments or random I/O workloads.
  • AutoMAID Technology, delivering ‘Speed with Green’ for up to 85% reduction in power consumption for applications such as backup to disk or general file storage.
  • Density with Active Drawer Technology, an approach to simplifying maintenance of high density storage systems by providing continuous operation even when one of the drive drawers is opened to service disks or fans.
  • High Availability featuring dual redundant hot-pluggable storage controllers with automatic failover for no point-of-failure configurations.
  • Storage Virtualization enabled features with the flexibility to pool multiple LUNs and add additional storage on-the-fly with automatic storage I/O rebalancing.
  • Shared Files for servers and users via CIFS, NFS, or both protocols simultaneously.
  • Data Protection with support for snapshots, asynchronous replication, synchronous replication, and NDMP.
  • Rapid Deployment in which the system is up and running in just 15 minutes.

As a provider of asset management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and transportation planning, Data Transfer Solutions LLC (DTS) helps its clients automate their worlds, reduce their workload and organize their data through customized technology. Supported by Nexsan partner LH Computer Services, DTS chose the E5000 Series NAS storage system to effectively and efficiently manage its storage environment.

"As a user of agile practices to guide our work, we selected the Nexsan E5000 NAS storage system for primary file storage. In addition to the superior storage density and operational efficiency it provided, we were especially impressed by the flexibility of the unit," said Trey Fragala, Chief of Operations, Data Transfer Solutions, LLC. "The system can be configured with a mix of SSD, SAS and SATA drive technologies depending on the performance and capacity requirements which allows for greater storage customization to meet application requirements."

All Nexsan storage systems feature centralized storage management software for simplified deployment, management and support and offer a range of enterprise features including system redundancy for high availability and powerful performance for demanding applications. E5000 NAS storage systems deliver an easy and quick out-of-the-box experience by integrating reliable Nexsan storage hardware and software intelligence. Advanced technologies for high density, energy efficiency and reliability are included with every E5000 storage solution.

The new E5510 is available through Nexsan’s network of authorized channel partners, with pricing that starts at $15,000 MSRP.

Nexsan offers SAN or NAS systems, but is supposed to launch an unified product in 1Q12, revealed CEO Philip Black to StorageNewsLetter.com.

He also said that the company, already in file de-dupe, will have block de-dupe "in two to three months", with its own technology developed by the team of AESign Evertrust, a firm in fixed content storage software acquired in 2005.

He didn't reveal the financial results of the 200-employee private company, but only wanted to say:" According to analysts, we are growing and profitable". Last known figures were published for its most recent IPO last year - refiled for the third times and finally postponed due to 'market conditions': revenues of $60.9 million for fiscal year ending June 2009 2009 with $3.5 million net income, and $34.3 million and $0.5 million respectively for the six-month period ending December 31, 2009. Black doesn't consider to refile an IPO for his company in the next future.

Originally launched two months ago, Nexsan 5000 series comprises a base unit, with one or two controllers in a 19-inch rack form factor. It's a NAS with 15 drives, the 16th slot containing an SSD a a cache, not for user capacity, with a caching software especially developed by the RAID manufacturer. Drives can be 15,000rpm SAS, near-line 7,200rpm SAS (both of them mainly coming from Hitachi GST) or SSDs (main supplier being Toshiba).

Behind that, for more capacity, it's possible to connect several extension units trough SAS, FC or iSCSI interfaces with the same kind of drives to reach up to 1PB .

Base price is $15,000 for 9TB on HDDs and one controller, software included. It's around €18,000 for 54TB and €50,000 for 180TB with HDDs only, end user price. Count half million dollars for 1PB.

Nexsan doesn't sell directly to end users, but through channel only, with some OEMs like Agfa and General Electric Healthcare, but never storage companies. Main competitors are Dell, EMC, NetApp, according to Black who also adds Sanmina-SCI, a subcontractor manufacturer now with its own R&D for storage subsystems.

He give us some information of the consequences of Thailand bloods on his firm that always sells subsystems with HDDs included into the package. "Our main supplier, Hitachi GST has not been affected but has problems of transportation, so they are just waiting for the roads to be reopened. Up to now, we got only a small growth in the prices and we have not increased the prices of our systems."
