ExaGrid De-Dupe Disk Backup Supporting Tivoli Storage Manager
To reduce dependence on tape
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on November 2, 2011 at 2:57 pmExaGrid Systems, Inc. announced support for IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM).
The combination of ExaGrid’s disk-based backup with deduplication appliance with TSM enables customers to eliminate the overhead of tape management in TSM environments as well as shrink their backup windows, improve recovery times, and cost effectively protect more data on secure, reliable disk.
Using ExaGrid, TSM customers are now able to deploy an ExaGrid disk-based appliance in a TSM backup environment, reducing their dependence on tape and also freeing up expensive disk previously used for backup that can be used for primary storage. TSM customers will also benefit from ExaGrid’s GRID scalability to maintain backup performance as data grows over time.
The combination of TSM and ExaGrid disk-based backup
with deduplication offers:
- Additional reduction in the amount of backup data beyond that offered by TSM’s incremental forever methodology. Customers can expect up to 10:1 further reduction for 30 days retention using ExaGrid’s disk backup with deduplication.
- Management of one disk pool – which eliminates the prior management challenge of maintaining a separate primary disk pool as a staging area from which to copy daily TSM backups. Furthermore, unlike competing disk backup systems that still require a separate primary storage pool for larger data sizes, ExaGrid’s disk backup with deduplication serves as the primary storage pool for all data sizes, thereby dramatically simplifying IT management of backup.
- Freeing the availability of expensive disk used as the primary disk pool, allowing customers to reclaim it for their primary storage needs.
- Elimination or reduction in the need to restore from tape, even when the restore is coming from an offsite copy of the backup data.
- Fast disaster recovery – via WAN-efficient replication for offsite disaster recovery and rapid restore capabilities. A secure connection assures data integrity while eliminating many of the costs and hassles of handling, transporting, securing and storing tapes at offsite locations for disaster recovery.
- Unparalleled GRID-based scalability – 1TB to 130TB with no forklift upgrades and no performance degradation as data grows.
- Low price and IT operational costs – architecture delivers price-performance.
"Our customers need a reliable backup solution that is easy to manage and offers top-notch performance," said Chris Pace, CEO for Centre Technologies. "Combining the powers of TSM with ExaGrid will better serve end users. They now have access to continuous data protection for disaster recovery, the ability to reclaim their data center capacity and a comprehensive disk pool to manage all TSM backups. The latest is a win for everyone."
"IBM TSM customers can be up and running with the ExaGrid disk-based backup system quickly and easily," said Marc Crespi, vice president of product management for ExaGrid Systems. "By adding support for IBM TSM, we’ve made backup management much easier. In addition, ExaGrid’s highly scalable GRID architecture allows for cost-effective scalability with no forklift upgrades as TSM users’ data grows."
With over 3,500 systems installed worldwide, ExaGrid has the industry’s second-largest installed base of disk backup appliances with data deduplication in mid-market and small enterprise companies. More than 250 real-world ExaGrid customer success stories and video testimonials are published on the company’s website.
TSM joins a list of backup applications and utilities supported by the ExaGrid disk-based backup appliance. Supported, test-certified applications include: Symantec NetBackup and Backup Exec, CommVault Simpana, CA ARCserve, EMC NetWorker, HP Data Protector, LiteSpeed for SQL Server, Idera SQLsafe, Red Gate SQL Backup, Quest vRanger, Veeam Backup & Replication, VMware .vmdk files, IBM iSeries/AS400 (LaserVault UBD), POSIX-compliant TAR files, Oracle RMAN, and SQL Dump.
ExaGrid’s support for TSM is scheduled to ship in November of 2011.
