Built around Infortrend’s ESVA (Enterprise Scalable Virtualised Architecture), the solution delivers performance and offers support for Windows, Mac and Linux clients. By delivering high-speed file access and sharing, strong computing power and reliable enterprise-class data storage, the ESVA Cluster File System is for media/entertainment and HPC applications.

Media/entertainment applications have specialised requirements, and need an IT infrastructure that allows simultaneous non-linear editing of recorded content by multiple users, offers high bandwidth to meet the demand of HD and SD content, and features scalability to accommodate data growth. The ESVA Cluster File System meets these demands. At a 2K frame size and with a frame rate of 23.98fps, the system can reach a read capability of 78 streams and write capability of 39 streams when processing 10-bit RGB non-compressed video content. In addition, capacity can be expanded up to 4PB.

The computing power offered by the new solution’s clustered structure makes it for HPC applications. The solution can reach a read performance of up to 24,000MB/s and a write performance of up to 12,000MB/s, enabling it to meet the requirements of demanding application environments.

Infortrend has experience in the media and entertainment industry, and its solutions have been deployed in major television broadcast events around the globe. One of these events was the 16th Asian Games, held in Guangzhou, China in November 2010. As the largest international sports competition in Asia, broadcasts of the event were seen around the world, and Infortrend’s ESVA solution enabled organisers to smoothly record and store data and prepare the content for broadcasting.

Thomas Kao, director of product planning at Infortrend, noted: "Having worked closely with many media and entertainment companies, Infortrend has taken advantage of this expertise to release a file-sharing and storage solution that is able to meet all the challenges presented by today’s media environments. This comprehensive solution enables users to record, edit, broadcast and store their content without having to piece together a solution from different vendors. HPC applications can also benefit from our solution, as it offers performance levels rarely seen in the industry."

The ESVA Cluster File System solutions consists of ESVA storage arrays, two metadata servers, one LAN gateway server and system agents. Three types of host connectivity are available for the storage arrays, including 8Gb/s Fibre Channel (FC), 1GbE iSCSI and 10GbE iSCSI. Metadata servers enable data sharing for SAN-based systems and the LAN gateway server enables data sharing for LAN-based systems, while the agent facilitates communication between clients and the servers.
