77 Times Faster VM Recovery With Veeam

A new lab report released by Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) states that virtual machine (VM) recovery with Veeam Software‘s Backup & Replication is 77 times faster than traditional image-based recovery – taking less than two minutes, no matter how large the VM.

vPower, Veeam enables a set of patent pending capabilities including Instant VM Recovery. The report also focused on vPower’s ability to automatically and non-disruptively verify backup recoverability and object-level recovery from any virtualized application.
 
Instant VM Recovery
"ESG Lab tested recovery of VMs of various sizes," said Lauren Whitehouse, Senior Analyst for ESG and co-author of the report. "No matter what size VM was tested, Veeam’s Instant VM Recovery method took under two minutes, while a full-image recovery using the other product grew from 11 minutes to nearly 2 hours as the VM grew from 16 GB to 200 GB. This is noteworthy because recent ESG research showed that 53 percent of IT professionals say they can tolerate less than one hour of downtime for tier-1 data without significant business impact. Veeam’s Instant VM Recovery returns users to productivity by enabling VMs to be restarted on any host in minutes, relieving IT of emergency full restores."

Veeam Backup & Replication also eliminates the risk of unrecoverable backups. "The importance of having a viable backup cannot be overstated," Whitehouse said. "In fact, when we asked ESG respondents about challenges they experience with current data protection processes and technologies, 42 percent mentioned difficulty in validating backup/recovery success. Veeam’s SureBackup Recovery Verification feature provides a flexible and comprehensive recovery test solution that can be run independently from scheduled backup operations. That means IT can test every backup of any VM easily, quickly and non-disruptively."
 
U-AIR
The ESG Lab also tested another capability offered by Veeam Backup & Replication: U-AIR (Universal Application-Item Recovery), which allows individual application objects for any virtualized application to be recovered without additional backup agents or special backups. "Protection of business applications is a high priority for organizations," Whitehouse explained. "When asked to cite their most significant data protection priorities, more than 25 percent of participants in recent ESG research mentioned improving application backup. Since Veeam runs the application in an isolated environment directly from the backup, application-item recovery is less expensive and more reliable than standard object-level recovery."
